the ears of those packed in the court-
room there was a slight stir but no

ICE BRIDGE FORMS

'i‘he first ice bridge to span the lower
Niagara River this year formed on
the first anniversary of the tragedy
of February 4th`.1912, when three
people were swept to their deaths on
a similar structure, which broke
from its moorings. and, slowly disin-
tegrating, passed down the river.
Blush ice forming in the upper river
and Lake Erie has been passing over
the brink for the past few days, but
not until Tuesday was there suffi-
cient of. this to block the river.It was
held in* check by the spillway of the
Niagara Falls Power Company's tun-
nel, and backed up until now the riv-
er is completely spanned by the na-
tural structure. The first natural
formation of the year is a failure,
as ice' bridges go, and it will pro-
bably be several days before it devel-
'ops into a strong structure, but
even then those visiting the falls for
the purpose of seeing the winter
scenery will not be permitted to
cross.
The passage of the structure last
year is responsible for this, the offl-
cials of the different park systems
having enacted laws prohibiting visi-
tors or any others from crossing on
the bridges that may form in the
winter months. .

SEATTLE, Wash., Feb. 7-Annibe1-
le Bressi, an Italian bunker of Seat-
tlc and Vancouver, I3. C., is wanted
by the police on u warrant embezzle-
ment. He has been missing nearly a
week and complaint was made to the
police Tuesday by 15 of his country-
men.
The Vancouver branch of Bressi's
bank is said to have received $100,-
000 or more from Italians who desir-
ed to transmit it to Italy. Com-
plaints Tuesday snid it had never
reached that country. The banks in
both cities are closed. __ __
Bitessi recently was refused Ameri-
can citizenship on the ground that
his moral character was not good.
It was shown that he had been char-
ged with various crlmes but escaped
trial in each case, as the complaining
witnesses failed to appear, and could

ponded to the number of two of those
stolen in the theft of the $200,000

Asking the man, who seemed to be
a foreigner, to wait a few minutes
the tener telephoned to a Private de-
tective agency and to the post office
inspector. The detectives and in-
spector speedily arrived and took the
man in custody.

ON STRIKE
NEW YORK, Feb. 7.-The commit-
tee of ninnugcrs of the eastern rail-
roads announced to-night that their
firemen had voted almost unanimous-
ly to strike. A statement was signed/
by chairinaii Elisha Lee for the com-
mittee, which says: “Advlces receiv-
eil by the eastern railroads indicate
that the 70,000 firemen, almost to a
man, have voted 'Yes' on the propos-
ition to strike and tie up ovcr 52,000
smiles oi' railroads, rather than accept
the offer of the companies to arbi-
trate through a committee of disin-
terested men of sufficient numbers
adequately to consider the magnitude
of the questions at issue.
If the firemen announce that as a
result of their strike vote their com-
mittee will cnll out the men, the
railroads will, of course, take steps
immediately to prepare for the oper-
ation of trains undcr strike condi-
tions. The companies feel, however.
that' such a catastrophe should in tliel
