IIASZARD’S GAZETTE, ' MARCH" 26. (For Hsssard’u Gssous.) Nrw Yoxx, March I, 1853. The weather—that universal topic with En- 31i.i,,.,eg. snd gr-urnbloru—-has been of late most changeable, and as I write, the rain putters against the sash with a chilling sound, and has dung .0 for (lie last 40 hours, under the influ- ence of ii north east _wind. The prospect of Gotham under such circumstance is neither cheerful nor ins irating; i_f, therefore, my let- ter should prove eus attractive than anticipated, cu must attribute it to the hygrornative state of the atiaosphere, and possibl to a scarcity of news. Political parties are al on the yin’ vivc hr the revelations of Saturday next, General Pierce, it seems, having declared his intention of not naming his Cabinet until that day. The close silence he has maintained on the subject reduced much excitement among the ol- cial expectants, but has certainly met_ with the approval of all who consider discretion to be one of the chief qualifications of ppblio man. That he will make a judicious selection is gone- rally hoped and expected, and judging from his reserve and determination, as we tact and judgment with which he_hau met and avoided all overtures of pa _ idolatry ‘I-l_1d public manifestations; we_aro . is C0 in the general belief on this point. _The attempt reccntl made to shufle o_l enquiry into the con- duct 0 the corrupt civic Father, by dela ing the consideration of ‘the prpsentment c the Grand Jury, until their functions ceased b the E termination of their session, has arouse the 0”‘ spirit of indignation still more, and we have no doubt that ere lon ne of these popular movements, by which a matters of this charac- ter are more or less coinpletel verned in this republic, will bring the shame ess trucksters be- fore it lar r tribunal than that of the ordinary courts of aw. No one denies that gross abuse existed hitherto, but few were prepared to find the extent to which ublic wron had been per- petrated, by those into whose ands the city is entrusted. We shall keep you “ pos ' up” as the sa ing Il0I‘S,.lS on this sub- ‘ ct. The success of aptain Ericsscn’s Caloric ghip, seems to be complete as far as we are able to learn—-so much so, that a letter appears in the papers to-day, from the Secretary of the Navy, authorising him to build a fri to of 2000 tons for the Government. He has a so received numerous orders for others. It is mooted, that Captain Ericssou does not justly lay claim to the discovery of this motive power. Rev. Mr Sterling, in Scotland, having some years a successfully applied it to a small at on e Clyde, and to other machinery—but in this in- stance, the intense heat produced softened the metal emplo ed, to such a degree, as to render it impractica le to continue it. Captain E. cer- tainly deserves credit for the application to a large class of vessels, and as far as yet has roved without the inconveniences then be expldriiinced i perseverance has been_indc_>- mitable, and there would appear to . 111 ll‘! machinery, some new princi es involved which ‘i 5' o T entitle him to the merit of discovery. y tal Palace proceeds rapidly and will ver pro- bably be ready for opening at the expec time. It does not make as much noise here as might have been anticipated, but the stock is up high, very high; and we resume in this respect, is satistitctory to its originators. It will, no doubt, be a very interesting sight, but of course must not be mentioned in terms of 00llIfil'IlOn‘WItII its great prototype. National variety w_ilI mag- nify its excellence when com etc, but, in spite of this, it will ofer much to interest the specta- tor. I he to see P. E. From all we can learn, there can be little doubt, a verdict will be returned against Thomas Hen- derson, jun. of manslaughter, if not of murder. The evidence already produced before the jury, is such as to convince them, that the conduct of T. Henderson, jun. towards his father was barbarous in the extreme. Henderson was com- mitted to prison on Thursday, for safe kee ing.
