HAVANA, Cuba, March 1- Five years ago nearly all the potatoes that arrived at the port of Havana came of 1B0 pounds. Five years ago near- ly all the potatoes that arrived at the other ports o! the Island and the towns oi the interior cam tram Nova. Scotia packed in barrels. All this ls changed. Today practically all ‘the table potatoes imported by Cuba during the Canadian potato season coma from Prince Edward Island packed in sacks containing ninety pounds. This change has not been the re- sult o! any special eflort to push the sale o! these potatoes but has been brought about because of the superior quality o! Prince Edward Island potatoes. They arrivo here full weight, even size and tree 1mm defects and the sack ol ninety pounds is convenient to handle. Prince Edward Ltand potatoes are selling 1n the city market today from twenty to thirty rents a sack oi ninety pounds, Vmore than potatoes from other places. Though the Cu- bnn consumers are paying a higher price for these potatoes, because o1 the better quality, the Prince Ecl- ward Island producer is receiving lit- tie or no benefit from these advanc- ed priccs which the people are will» ing to pay as the C.I.F. price is be- ing forced down to a levcl with prices quoted from other sections in the north. Cuba requires during the Canadian potato season, that is lrom Septem- ber 1st to July lst, about 2,000,000 sacks of ninety pounds. With a de- mand all over the Island for Prince Edward Island potatoes it would seem as if something should be done by the Prince Edward Island Gou- ornmem», co-operating with the ship- pers and growers to secure in the Cuban market the very best prices available, preventing prices being de- pressed by cargoes coming unsold, or the market being manipulated by certain interests not identified with the welfare of the potato industry oi’ Prince Edward Island. During the week ending February cargoes wm-c sold at $1.10 c.1.t_ Ha- vana. This ls a very low price but perhaps not out or line with prices obtainable in other markets, Within two weeks from the time these sales were made at $1.10 a group of Havana importers, that are operating in Prince Edward Island. were quoting to other importers oi Havana a price o! 00 cents c.l.f. Ha- vana breaking down the price, witll‘ out any reason that can be instilled. 20 cents a sack. The expenses on these ninety cent potatoes are exact- ly tho same as on the $1.10 potatoes. Dcductlng '10 cents from the 90 cents for expenses it leaves 20 cents for ninety pounds to the grower. When the price is broken down to 90 cents here by quoting that price to all the trade it ls impossible to make sales above that price, consequently the nmrkot in Prince Edward Island, is forced down to the same extent. What thought is given to the STOW- er who 1s iorccd to sell these pota- toes at a. ruinous price when this group decide to force prices down in the effort, apparently, to secure a monopoly of the Prince Edward Is- land business iri Cuba. There 1s absolutely no need of Prince Edward Island potatoes be- ing sold in Cuba at the present time, or during the balance of the season, for less than $1.10 for sack oi ninety pounds because the people here want these potatoes and potatoes from other places would have to be sold less than 80 cents c.l.f. to secure the business in competition with Prince Edward Island potatoes at $1.10. When the Prince Edward Island farmers have succeeded in produc- ing an article that ls wanted by ev- ery family in Cuba, surely some me- thod can be employed to secure for these producers the fullest benefit p0|llble as a result ot this demand.
