SANDERSON & £9 GROCERS Scotia EButertainment at Emerald Never before was the St, Patrick’s evening celebration at Emersid attended with euch enccess as on Saturday. The night was beautiful, the roade fairly good and the trains from Summerside aed Cape Traverse were crowded by the time tvev reached Bmerald. Before the cartain arose even standing room was ata pre mium avd over a hundred, unable to gain admittance, had to eontent them- eelves with loekiag through the windows. At8.15 the curtain roe, and Mr. G R Me. Mahon, president of Emerald Braach B I 8 addressed the audienee, after whieh excelient music was furvished by the orchestra, compored of Mr. Heary Demp- sey, let violin, Mr. W J Brown, corset, Miss Anrie B Fraser, 20d violin, Miss | Janie McDonald, mandolin, and Mies Amy | Brvesten, organo. The address by the | Rev. J M Forbes waa an eloquent exposie } tion ef the life and work of the great apostle of the Irish nation. At | the conclusion he was greeted with rounds of applause. Miss Flo | McKenzie gave two re:dings with lgreat effect. “ The Old Violin,” and i A Bitofthe Thin Red Line,” and was |encored on each oceasion. Mr. George Hennessey savug in a .good voiee, “ The girl I Loved in Sunny Tennessee,” aad “She was Happy till She Met You,” and was greeted with great applause, respond- ing to encores. The eornet sole by Mr W J. Brewn was well rendered. But with- eut donbt the chief feature of the enter tninmeant was the presestation of the thrilling aud laughable drama, “The Irish Agent,” with the followieg cast of ebar acters : ees Siete cccvdes seve Milweod Doyle Sbaun Brady ..... . «eee Clements Ploed Darby Reardon............Mark A Smith Tighe Murphy ..............--- Jas A Ready Barney Burke..... .....Joho Monaghan Fravk Sheldon .................A C Deighaa | Father Tom..............-Matthias Smith Mary O’Neill........... Regina M Pleod Nerah O’Neill......... Maggie A MeMahen Kate Henneseey.....-.... Sophia MeMahen Needless to eay the play in the opinion of everyone present was an unprecedented success. Never before did amateurs pre- sent in Emerald such a highly creditable play. To particularize with any degree of fairness would be well nigh imposeible as each lady and gentleman sustained their “role” in manner that weuld do credit to professionals. However,we may say that “Darling Light,” “Barney,” and “Kate Hennesey,” kept the audience in good humor by the. laughable sayings andactions, while “Shaun ” the villain, “Mary O’Neill,”’the heroine of the play, “Con,” the cid man, “Father Tom,” who looked every inch a_ priest, “Frank” aod “Norah,” successfully interpreted the more serious parts ofthe play. Al! the performers deserve great credit indeed. As this play will be repeated at Kelly’s Cross, it will doubtiess on Monday, 26th inst., draw Py full house, Between the acts appropriate instrumen~ ial selections highly creditable to the performers, were rendered by the Kensington orchestra, mentioned above, which were well received. Mise Blanche Craig played the accompaniments in an ex- cellent manner. Aiter giving three cheers for the Queen and the Britsh gen- erals, and after the singing of the Na- tional Asthem, the vast audience dispereed with the conviction that the entertain- ments at Emerald have ever been and are destined to be highly successful.—Com. — i A A New Men Not Insured Sir Charles Tupper,in the House of Commons, eaid he had received a telegram from the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation that the ineurance of $1,060@,- 000 on the lives of the firat contingent would not apply to the men taking the places of those killed or severely wounded. He made this announcement because the question was asked him, and 88 the men were leaving for South Africa to-morrow, he desired that they should know their poeition. - --.
