imals. The claim made by some medi-
cal men that consumption may be abo-
lished by getting tuberculosis exter-
minated from all cattle herds is absurd
 and displays extreme ignorance of the l
nature and wide distribution of the dis-
ease. They do not know where it
comes from, nor whether the f-ow gets
its infection from man or man from the
cow. But it is known that the germs
are present every where, in the air,the
water, the food, and always ready to
do their deadly work on the enfeebled
or predisposed subject. V
Investigation has developed two con-
soling deductions. One is that tuber-
culosis is not hereditary. The other is
‘that it is possible to effect a cure.l
Cases have been noted where the ani-
mal had contracted the disease and
,and was declared diseased. The ani-
*mals having been killed and examined
. by the veterinary surgeon, evidence of
the disease having been present was
found, but dried up and enclosed in :A
shell, or, to use the professional term,
encvsted, the tuberculous germs being
I entirely shut off from the living tissue
and circulation by the enclosing

Such cases are not few and are good
cause for objecting to the test.
Another ,serious objection to the test
is that a very consideiable number of
animals reacting and pronounced dis-
eased are found when slaughtered to .be
perfectly healthy and sound. This, re-
member is acknowledged by the veteri-
nary surgccn who is at the head of that
department in Germany, wheie pains-

quired rise in temperature of the animal
tested is so slight, tp cause it to be con-
demned, that many accidental circum-
