Newton has a semi-weekly mail on Tuesdays and Fridays. The present carrrier’s duties are s3 follows: Leaves Newton for Orwell Post Office at 10.30 a. m., and is to remain at the latter post office for one heur and his hour of depar- ture for Newton 12.45. What I want to bring to light is this complaint: If the mail courier from Charlottetown hasn’t arrived he won't wait, and therefore Fri- day’s Examiner will not reach its sub- scribers until the following Tuesday Instead of getting them on Friday, the proper day, they are kept in the Orwell Post Office till Tuesday. And if such affairs are going to exist all that can be done is to withdraw our Examiner. Axcus. Newton Cross, April 27, 1894, VERNON RIVER BRIDGE FACTORY. A correspondont informs us that the Vernon River Bridge Cheese Factory is going to begin cheese making on May 15th Already the contracts for hauling the milk ou the different routes has been given and at much lower rates than last year. The quantity of milk delivered at the factory la-t year was 922,870 lbs.; quantity of chee-e manufactured, 83,315ibs., of the value of $8,770.13—a handsome sum for the patrons, paid monthly, enabling them to purchase their necessaries at cash price and keep out of the merchants’ books, in too many cases the ruin of our farmers. The output for the present year is expect- ed to be greatly in excess of last. The tine McInnis, President; David P. Irving, Secretary and Treasurer; John F. McLeod, Lemuel Hayden, D. R. Pursuant to notice a public meeting of the electors of Wood Islands and vicinity was held in the Wood Islands West School- house on Tuesday evening, the 17th inst., to discuss the tax question. The meeting was organized by appointing Duncan M. McMillan, Esq., Chairman, and Mr. Duncan Gillis, Secretary. After a gen- eral talk on the different systems of taxa- tion and on the unprecedented deficit of last year, the following resolution was unanimously adopted : “Whereas, The Government have dur- above the revenue, and whereas we believe that the greater part of this money was unnecessarily and injudiciously spent, therefore Resolved, That we agree to no system of taxation to carry on the present rate of expenditures.” After ordering the Secretary to send a report of the meeting to the Patriot news- paper for publication the meeting dis- persed, ——— -<—- -——— THE CAT CAME BACK. NOTE ANO COMMENTS. | —The latest United States Banking Cirenlar says: “Perhaps the most in- finential cause of the prevailing dulness comes from the condition of legislation in Congress,” “The financial resources centering in Wall Street are kept in suspense, plans tor new enterprises have to be pigeon- holed until these legislative triflers are | through with their exhibition of factional feeling and fencing, and manufacturere and merchants are kept on the gridiron of doubt waiting for they know not what.” How different in Canada! In three short weeks our tariff has been practically settled by a business Govervment in sp te of the Opposition triflers and kickers, and | businese goes on as usual. —The Toronto Star has an admirable carioon of Mr. McCarthy, M. P., who abused the Government’s fiscal policy and then ran away before the vote was taken, though athree hours wait was all he would have to make. The cartoon represents Mr. McCarthy in full flight, while the chalk marks upto the door of Parliament made by him calling for tariff reform are very plain. The rea- son why Mr. McCarthy did not vote was well told by agentleman who knows Mr. McCarthy’s mind pretty weil. “ You see Mr. McCarthy thought if he voted with the Grits he could not eatch any Conservatives in the country, while he wae eo mixed in his contentions that any re- solutions he might have tried to move for himself and Col. O’Brien would have been laughed at?’ Evidently the man from North Sim@oe finds statesmanship trouble- some. ~—0G0e- e+ere NEWS NOTES. Hon. Peter Mitchel! has reeovered.
