Mr. Darby also warned that ”we ahould walk with a great deal of caution before allowing the C.N.R. to take over the Wood Islands service." He stated that he had made representation to the Turgeon Commlsison regarding the ferry service at Borden and that he knew the operation by the C.N.R. of that ferry had never been par. ticularly satisfactory. He quoted reportn from the Duncan Commission in lbw and the Siroia Comminion in 1038 and use the Royal Commission to show that the service had not been aatiafactory to the Province. "It is operated too much for the C.N.R. and not for the benem of the people in the Province." it was stated in the Royal Commi5.. sion report. Freight Rate zone The Attorney-General also re- counted the efforts that were made to have the two-zone freight i-ate system abolished in the Pro- vince. "The C.N.R. always op- posed the efforts of this Province to make it one zone for the freight rates," stated Mr. Darby. He referred again to the Royal Commission report of 1951 which stated "It would be most desirable io have the Island's request com- plied with.” Mr. Darby stated that the Board of Transport Commissioners at Ottawa had issued an order to make one freight rate zone in the Mr. Parker said the School Board was anxious to have citi- zens know of the urgent need of increased school facilities and C.N.R.. approached us to have something worked out agreeable to both parties," he stated. He add- ed that satisfactory ai'raiigemcrii.s had been made between the Gov- ornment and the railways on the matter several wceka ago. ”The head of the Turgeon Com- mission was a. little aurprrised at the change of the heart of the C. NE. on the issue," stated Mr. Darby. "He stated that perhaps if we snt. for a couple of yeara we would have the beat traiisporta- tion system in Canada." The Attorney-General added that in view of the attitude of the C. N. R. towards transportation on P.E.I. the Province should walk with a great deal of caution be- fore allowing the C,N.R. to take over the Wood Islands service. He didn't think there was any danger of anotlier strike and the resultuiit tie-up of Ii'H.fTIc as was pictured by most of the other members. "I don't think that niiy mem- ber of the Government ever thought the strike in 1950 would materialize," he stated. ”I don't think any such strike will ever take place again and I don't think the Government of Canada would allow such a strike. to occur." He concluded by urging the mcnibors to be very careful in their coii.sidei'ation of the resolu- crn high-school will also be con- tained in the building. ,Mr. Myron - Bell occupied the chair and introduced the speaker who was thanked for his address by the co-chairman, Mr. Brian Cudmore.
