L REDUCING CANADNS DEBT. _-L_- Dominion is being reduced at a rate that promises its extinction in the compar- atively near iulure.” This is a rather un- hlushiagetatement in view ot the 'vast obligations to which the company ie being this your committed. For notwitbstand the country has gene on increasing since the Liberal party came into power. Their own oilcial figures show that the debt ot 1@6 was $258,497,433, and in 1902 it was $271,829,090 an increase ot thirteen mil- lions. The; efore it we give full credit to the alleged reduction of nine millions this year the debt is stilllarger by a margin of some millions than when the Laurier Government came into power. But strange things have happened during the past session which have com- mitted the country to new obligations on railway account alone which can hardly fall short of 150 millions of dollars. This added to the present debt will make a total ot over 410 millions of dollars. And yet the Globe insults the intelligence cf its readers with the promise that this vast and burdensome weight will be ex- tinguished in the near future. The Globe's memory is all too short for a news~ paper indulging in such financial delu- sions. For nearly twenty years before 18% when the debt was mounting from 135 to 250 millions, The Globe steadily bewail- ed the enormous burden of the debt and its interest charge.
