It really takes sharp eyes to avoid mistak ng our preteren¢ es for our needs. One ot the easiest things in the world 1s to persuade ourselves that we need that to which our desires prompt us. | It 1s often the saddest idler of the school-room who fancies that his health | will break down unless the long vacation arrives speedily. Lazy people | always need rest. Those who do least for themselves are most positive | they need outside help It is safe for most of you to give | more thought to the needs of others than to your own. Giving and Getting. As we give so will we get. We save ourselves by saving others. “There is that maketh poor and yet maketh rich.” And so the church that is imbued with the true missionary spirit is always blessed with domestic prosperity. Take the case of congregations. In exact proportion as they support missions is in nine cases out of ten the measure of their own prosperity. Show usa con- gregation zealous in the work of mis- sions and we will show you a congrega- tion whose parson is paid up to the day, whose church is liberally maintained, whose finances are elastic and where everything, as the saying is, runs on four wheels.— Church Work. We are so bitterly jealous and sus- picious of each other, so afraid that one denomination may steal a march on another, that we have been willing to rob our children of the priceless of boon of religious instruction. We love | religion a good deal but we hate each other more. This is the case as it stands in all its naked undisguised ugli- ness. It is the fault, not of infidels or | sceptics or unbelievers or of the indiffer- | ent and worldly minded, but of people who say that religion is the most precious thing in the world.—Church Work, —To pray as God would have us ; to pray with all the heart and strength, with the reason and the will ; to believe vividly that God will listen to your voice through Christ, and verily do the thing He pleaseth thereupon—this is the last, the greatest achievement ‘of the Christian’s warfare on earth. —The diamond is intended to flash out its brilliancy to the world, but it cannot do so until it is mined and polished. ‘The mind, the brilliancy of man is intended to shed forth its lustre, but cannot do so until it is developed and cultivated. A religion without mysteries would be like a ladder inthe air. It would lead nowhere. The mysteries, so called, of religion are only mysteries because we cannot see to the end of them. They are the bridge between the visible and invisible. The man who thinks that he will be saved by his correct belief alone, is like the savage who hung a bottle of medicine round his neck as a charm against disease.
