Twenty-nine body styles in five series with important improve- ments incorporated in body de- sign, styling and color, riding qualities, ease of steering and greatly increased all-around vis- ion are offered throughout the 1953 Pontiac range. This year, Power steering is or- fered as an option at extra cost on Pontiac models equipped with automatic transxnlmions. Avail- Of six-cylinder engines, the latter with substantially increased power. Again this year, two automatic transmissions are offered - an improved Powerglide or the dual. range Hydra-Matic Drive, de- pending on the series - as op- tional extras. Three of the series -- Pathfind- er, Pathfinder Deluxe and ' Laur- entlan - are mounted on 115-inch wheelbase and offer collectivly three four-door sedans, three two- door sedans. two club coupes, two sport coupes, and a business coupe. As an aid to easier parking, there J5 approximately two inches less over-all length than formerly in these three series through less front and rear overhang - a re- sult of the new position of bumper guards and bumpers. 'I'he.Chieltain Special and Chief- tain Deluxe series. have been lengthened to 12-inch wheelbase, and offer a choice of six or eight- ryiinder engines with all models. Available in the Chieftain Special are a four-door sedan, 8 passen- ger station wagon and an 8 pass- enger station wagon. Chieftain De- iuxe includes a two sedan, a four- door sedan. Deluxe Catalina, Cus- tom Catalina, convertible and a nation wagon. NEW FEATURES Features of the new bodies, which are immediately distinguish- able from previous models, in- clude a one-piece curved wind- shield, roomier interiors, high rear deck contour, greater trunk space. new rear fender design, com- pletely revised styling of sheet metal and, trim. and new luxur- ious interior designs. Pathfinder Deluxe Series (ex- cept club coupe), Laurentlan Ser- ies, and both Chieftain Series carry large, one-piece wrap-around rear windows on all closed models. while the width of the rear window in the Pathfinder series and the Pathfinder Deluxe club coupe has been increased by' approximately four inches. The Autronic Eye. G'M's famed automatic headlight dimmer, is offered on all 1963 Pon- tiac Series as an option at extra cost. ' A new front end suspension sys- tem designed for easier steering and steadier ride, is offered on both Chieftain Series. In addition to levelling out the roughest roads, Pontiac's new front end suspen- sion greatly improve steering and handling on curves and corners - a feature to be appreciated by those who do considerable driving in large cities or over winding roads. Rear springing on the new Pon- tiacs has also been improved. Front venilpanes are now crank operated and there is a new in- strument panel with improved functional styling and new posi- tioning of controls and dials for better visibility and simplified operation. Control knobs are nar- row plastic with stainlem steel in- serts. Improved green anti-glare lighting illuminates the operating controls. which may be dimmed by rotating the headlamp switch. In the new Pontiacs, there are many other appearance changes which begin at the front bumper and extend the length of the car. The new bumper styling gives an impression of massive strength. There is a completely re-designed more masive radiator grille the elements of which carry out the styling theme of the car. In this assembly the traditional Pontiac Indian head medallion is held midway between the symmetrical center grille blades on a chrome bridge. These grille blades encircle the parking lamps which have al- so been re-designed.
