The | amount of the -defalcation is stated to be $7,600,000. The Surrender of Nugent's factory property is demanded on the ground that it was acquired by money obtained frem the Bank under a promise of turning it over in case of necessity. New York, Oct. 31. A Newark despatch says at a meeting ef the directors of the Mechanics’ National Bank, held yesterday afternoon, cashier VO. | L. Baldwin stated to them that the bank | was not in « cenditien te pay, and that the liabilities were so great that further attempts to carry on business would be useless. The directors then offered to subscribe $500,000 to put the bank in condition for busi- ness, but the cashier responded that $2,- 000,000 weuld net do it. The director -$ | then decided to suspend atenee. The fol- lowing are the directors :—Stephen H.Cen- dick, Lewis ©. Grover, Wiiliam UOlark, Benry C. Howell, Oscar L. Baldwin,George| A. Haslea, James E. Bond, Joseph A. Hansley, Joseph Hencler; Joseph A. Han- | tley, President and Oscar L. Baldwin, Cashier. The last named oflicer was man- ager. The news came like a thunderclap on the community. There was not a sus-| picion that the institution was not the | strongest in Newark. The directors have | been considered the mest trustwerthy rag ef meninthe city and the reputatien of Baldwin as a financier probably stood first | in the State. Newark, Oct. 30. Cashier Baldwin of the Mechanies) Bank was waited upon this afternoon at his one by the United States District Attorney and Commissioner Keashy, and was admitted to bail in $26,000 te appear at court Nevem- ber 7th. | Baldwin said voluntarily that abeut the | year 1873 he began to make loans to C. Nugent & Oo., without security and with-| eut the sanction of the Directors. Having} begun he was in the power of Nugent & Co., and continued these accemmodations, | | sometimes loaning them $50,000 in one | month, until the total increased to a ruin- | ous amount. Nugent assured him that he | had. a large property and capital in his business which would make all loans good. Nugent was aware that he (Baldwin) was using the bank’s money, and always prom- ised to surrender his property in case of any trouble. Under these circumstances the loan was increased till it reached ever $2,000,000. Nugent would give drafts on friends in New York which would be credited to him as cash, and Baldwin would use the bank’s money to take up the drafts when due. The books were falsified to indieate that the acceunts were correct. Finally, however, the losses were placed in account of the Mechanic’s Bank in New York, so that while it appeared that the Newark Bank had a claim for $2,000,000 ainst the New York bank, in truth the wark owes the New York bank $2,000, 000. This difference is almost wholly due to the irregular transactions with Nugent. He said he had speculated very little arid lost nothing in that way. Nugent can be | held liable for his part in the transactions. | GREAT BRITAIN AND [RELAND.
