B., We Must Improve our Exports. To the Editor of the Patriot. latter, written nearly a year since, [ promised to address you he necessity of ‘improving bat Lhave since been so In my last again on eur expor < much occupied with business matters ewe . “ E ; : that I have not, hitherto, had leisure to return te the aubject. In my ter | point aj out that the dny 3 of en shipbui ding, as one of our great in- dustries ; bad passed away; as iron sailing an steamships were superseed- Since then my last let- Wo vi- ing the wooden ones. en | opinion in regard to wooden ships has heen confirmed by thecourse of business, There has been some revival of trade. Freights on the North Atlantic have been ‘ fairly good,’ (until ‘ebecked ’ by a ring of forestallers who hold the bulk of the grain at Chicago and other cen- tres of colleetion in America, with the expectation that the requirements of Europe will force prices up.) Now the point I want to make is this, that Al though there has been a partial revival in trade and the demand for iron sailing ships and steamers has been pretty brisk, there has been no demand for wooden ships. A few of our Teiand built ships have been forced eff at less than half the cost of production. As I remarked in my last letter, ‘ except foi special trades, wooden ships area thing of the pass. Shipbuilding in this provinee, when wood was plenty—in the days when the Cambridges, Owens, Welshs, Davies’ Peakes, Yeos, Longworths, and other prominent shipbuilders carried on this industry-—-was of great advantage to the colony, when the innd was mostly covered by the forest; but now that the land has been ‘cleared up,’ ia my opin- jon—even if shipbuilding was a payisg businese--in the interests of this pro- vinee the time has arrived when it should be ‘dropped’ and our people should turn their attention mainly to agriculinre and fishing pursuits, which will last for ‘alltime, We have no other resources; our insular position} shuts us out from manutacturing except} for our Island consumers. Who are! our Island consumers? [farmers and} fishermen and tho mechanics employed | ia supplving these industries ! | Now, if my assumption be correct, the prosperity, of this provinee hinges upon these leading, and f may say ‘Natural industries.’ It must strike any person who thinks of the matter, that something better ought to be done with the large surplus of hay now growing in the hay-growing sections of the Island, than for farmers to be hawking it about Charlottetown, and selling it from $6 to $7 per ton by the single load. in Engiand a very common condition in the leases is that no hay or straw shall be carted off the land, but used on it for foeding. The reason is obvieus; the Jand cannot be kept in good heart unless stock is fed and the manure heaps necessary to fer- tilize the land kept up. Now, though we have a kindly soil, easy of cultivation, still the largest part of our Island may be called ‘ hungry land.’ Itrequires to be well supplied with barn yard manure and lime. For- tunately our mussel beds furnish not only the lime but saline and fertilizing matter in addition. Itis quite eheor-| ing to soe the railway carrying mussel] mud into the heart of the country. Again, we have ‘ lobster offal,’ and as the lobster business is now assuming great dimensions jhe application ef this manure is enriching our seaboard farins, and by and by, like the mussel mud, it can be carried inland. These remarks are morely preliminary to the object I have ic view in writing this letter, viz., to impress upon farmers—1 mean these who have good grass lands—take the West River, Crapaud, Tryon and along to Capo Traverse, as instances—tho nes eassity ef raising large beef cattle of the Durham and tbe short horn breeds for the English market, the same as fhoy doia the province of Ontario. We are 1000 miles nearer the sea than Ontario—only 150 miles from Halifax where the splendid Allen line of steam- eis, have special deck arrangements for eerrying eattle, call semiemonthly, be- sideonr own steamer “ Prince Edward.’ | (Conchuded in eur next. ) j MENFATURE ALMANAC, SUNDAY...............
