Sydney Demands 31,000 For Non - Appearance Of Islanders SYDNEY. Nov. 19 - (OP) - President Art Lipton of tiie Syd- ney Hockey Club said tonight Millionaires will demand forfei- ture of sl,000 and two points for Charlottetown Islanders' failure to turn up for a scheduled Maritime Major Hockey League encounter here. Millionaires based their demands on the grounds that Islanders "had not kept faith in making a fair try" to reach Sydney for tonight's contest. Sydney Vice President. Gene Connolly said the Charlottetown action was "unfair" to fans, many of whom had arrived at the Forum before it was announced the game would be called off. Mr. Lipton was critical of act- ions of the Islanders in returning to Charlottetown after Tuesday night's game in Halifax, instead of remaining there overnight and travelling here today. Announcement of the postpone- ment was made tonight after a telephone conversation between Mir. Lipton and Charlottetown coach Murph Chamberlain .ln New Glasgow. Islanders had requested a postponement earlier in the day. Mr. Lipton claimed the Char- lottetown club had ''lots of time" to reach here in time for the game "WhiIey" Ford Muslered Out of U. S. The Bay Boys Out Of Playoffs But Have Mccurdy tlup TRURO. Nov. 19 -(GP) -- The Maritime Rugby Union is wondering how it can clean up the season now that the Me- Curdy Cup, emeblematic of Maritime supremacy. has been spirited off to the Bay. Union secretary Dave Wilson said today he wired St. Francis Xavier University of Antigon- lsh. present trophy holders, to send the cup here for the title match Saturday between Hali- fax Wanderers and St. Dun- stan's University of Charlotte- town. But Glace Bay Caledonias, ruled out of the playdowns for failing to make a scheduled Armistice Day appearance against Wanderers, had taken the cup home in custody. Mr. Wilson didn't know what the next step will be for the M. R. U. In Glace Bay, Caiedonia'.s play- ing managr Don Maclnnis said anybody who wants the cup will have to come to the Bay to get it. Maclnnis has charged the union with "mili'oading" the Cape Breton team out of the playoffs. Cale- donin still insist on the right to tackle the winners of the Wander- ers-St. Dunstan's game for the trophy. Miners Want , Salurdaygiames GLACE BAY, N. On top of the thorny questions of schedules will be heaped the case of the Charlottetown Islanders and their failure or inability to make Sydney for last night's game. The Millionaires, according to a news dispatch are seeking the forfeiture of 51,000 and two points from the Islanders for "not making a fair try" to reach the Steel City. . 0 o Had weather conditions permit- ted the Islanders would have trav- elled to Sydney by plane jester- day. However all planes were grounded and the team left by car around 11 AM. They caught the one o'clock crossing at Borden and reached New Glasgow around Slh o'clock in the evening. Other than that officials here heard nothing from coach Chamberlain or any- one travelling with the team. El- forts to locate Chamberlain late last night showed that the Island- ers were not in New Glasgow, Truro or Amherst and it was believed that they were on the way back to the Island. There vras a. freight crossing from Cape Tormentine early this morning. O 0 O The Sydney cake Sunday will likely revolve around the words "Fair try." The Millionaires charge that the Islanders could have made the trip to Halifax and Sydney by car and thus make sure of fulfill- ing their obligations. The Islanders. short-staffed and taking advant- ages of every opportunity to rest the players decided to use planes for both games. They arrived back from Halifax by plane at two o'- clock yesterday mornlng with the intention of taking off again forl Sydney in the afternoon. When the! bad weather rolled in and the flights -were cancelled. it was ini- possible for the team to get away from here much before noon As it was they almost failed to catkh the one o'clock crosing because of al difficulty to secure cars for the trip. They obtained their last car at 10.45 am, one Even if they had left here early yin the day there is a question of lwhether or not they could nrake lsydney by game time. Country ymotorists reported heavy travel- lling in the eastern sections of the ;province yesterday afternoon and yevening. This same storm liit Cape yBreton in stronger force accord- linz to reports. Railway services in' iCupe Breton were disrupted yes- iterday and even lasi night in Syd- tney there were still power short- lnges. o 0 3 The loss of the game is B. tough jblow to the Sydney Club. This -same club is demanding two home :games a week for the remainder of the schedule and claim they must have them in order to oper- ate. The houses In Sydney average about. the same number as these in Charlottetown. The loss of the name means that they will have at least sl.C00 to make up when it. comes time to pass out the cheques at the end of the week. . . o . Had the Islanders reached Cape Breton they might have managed to snare the Mcciirdy Cup from the Glace Bay Caledonlans. It seems the Caledoriiiins have ob- tained possession of the Cup al- though how it is hot just clear. Last night the President of the Glace Btiy Club stated that any team wanting the trophy would have to come to Cape Breton and play for it. Nov. 2l9w(AP)-- Marcel Pronovost, Detroit's high- scoring defenceman, netted twice tonight to help Detroit Red Wins gain A 2-2 tie against the National League's cellar-dwelling New York Rangers. Pronovost tallied his goals after Rangers ran up a 2-0 lead on goals by Wally Hcrgesheimer and Neil Strain, making his ma- jor-league debut. Hergeshiemer, the loop's top goal-getter. scored his 13th goal of the season shortly after the half-way mark of the first period. Strain, up from Saskatoon of the Western League, netted early in the second period while Detroit was short-handed. The rookie left-winger let fly with a hard drive from about 30 feet out. The puck bounced off goalie Terry Siiwchuk's glove, struck him on the chin and boun- ced off the underside of the cross bar and into the net. Sawchuk went down on the Ice and was forced to retire to the dressing room. He received three stitches and his lower front teeth were loosened. SUMMARY First. Period 1--New York.
