NOVEMBER 25. 1%. . r THE PICTOU MAIL. For some weeks past he mails from Picton, brought by ‘the S. S. Princess have arrived considerably later than in the summer time, and inquiries are naturally made as to the cause. It is proper therefore to state that the delay is owing to the quantity of freight and the entirely inadequate facilities for handling it at Picton, The quantity of freight is and will continue to be so down to the close of navigation. Until the facilities for the transfer of freight from the Intercolonial to the steamer are improved the deten- tion at Picton seems unavoid able. It QUEEN 8'l'Rll7l'. ' The Steam Navigation Company have eacelleiit steamers both on the Picton and Point du Cbene routes mud are giving a good service, but they must carry freight as well as lthe mails and passengers. ' If the connections between the railway and lsteam:-r at Picton weie as easy as ai, Point du Cbene the detention now complained of would be avoided. The reported rising of D utr-h farmers in Cape Colony to join the Boer forces seems to be confirmed and: has a very grave appearance. Butit iq 'p be remembered that this was anticipated wh~n , the war began. The rising is not likely to attain very serious proportions as the Colony will be now quickly occupied by Brit- ish troops who will hold the would-be 1 rebels in awe. - The defeat and death of the Khalifa Tjust now reported by Lord Kitchener is an important event in the pacid- cation of the Soudan.
