The annual meeting of the Char- lotettovwn Anti Tuberculosis viety was held in the Board of Trade rooine last night. with the President, Mr. Joe. ‘Mictlarey in the chair. There was a. good at tendance, particularly of ladies. The President read his address as follows " To the officers and members of the Charlottetown Anti-Tuberculosis Society. Ladies and Gentlemen:- The Reports of the Secretary- Dispensary Nun.» contain full linformation as to the activities of this Society during the year just closed, and these officers are to be congratu- lated on the success of their labors and particularly upon the cornbre- hensible form of their reports. The very satidsoto y statements submit-ted leave little to be said as to the details of title work, but in keeping with. the usual custom l! am pleased to have the clpportunity and. privilege to offer some re- marks ‘bee/ring on tho work of the year. the usefulness of the society in the community as evident from its past record end on the desir- {Miity for united bublic action for lessening consumption and other inreventa-ble diseases. This was not. as largo an amount as that collect- ed the year previous, nor did the special contributions aggregate as much as formerly. ‘llhe amount of $410.50 realized through the Dr. Jenlttns coal fund was quite credit- able. Seventy families in distress during the extremely cold weather were provided with fuel from this fund in half ton quantities. The cash. De-ta-ils of her visits to the sick and poor are contained in her report which shows thnt daily visits were made throughout the city in the fcrenoon while in the afternoon she was present at the Dispensary rendering assist- ance and giving advice, and dlstri». buting medicines, food, clothing and fuel to those in need. In December last *Dr. Wodehouse iS-ecretary of the Canadian Tuber- culosis Association witih. head- lquantcrs at Ottawa, accompanied ,Dr. J. W. Robertson, C. M. Dr. Robertson referr- ed speciaily to ‘health activities in New Zealand and stated that if in Canada we could do as well we could save 15,000 babies every year. It was soon found that the pa-rson-s who presented them- selves at tho Dispensary were, in most cases, of the {poor class and duo that tile homes visited by the nilrse in charge were scenes of poverty and unsanitary conditions which could not be passed over without immediate relief and such attention es the circumstances de- mantitld, Consequently it was im- pOESIlbiB to divorce the care and attention due to the sick from the relief measures which were o1‘ ab- solute and immediate necessity when women and children were found to ‘be without fuel, food or sufficient clothing ‘to nourish and sustain them. Usefulness in Community ' As to the usefulness of the '.Socioty in the community 1 am sure that its was; record will fully iustify the moral and material sup- port recei-ved from tillc public. Seventeen years ago the organiza- tion u-ns launched in this Province as a Branch of the Canadian As- sociation the objects of which are to prevent the dprend of Consump- tion and to rail-eve .‘_n so Ca1- as pos- sible the distress of iihose who are afflicted wiith this disease. Much has been done to educate the peo- ple as to the ravages of tilbercul- osis and its infectious nature, but. it is wcli known that the resources and activity of ifs officers have been rlpread over n mucih broader iarea thsnithat at first outlined, for it was found impracticable to con- fine redief measures to any parti- Icular form of disease and. so, the broad policy of rulief to the poor as well as to the sick, in any csee when distress is found to exist, is practised in so for as the means at bend will ipormlt. , Among the measures secured by this society through several yenre of advocacy is the medical inspec- tion of pupils attending tre public schools in this city which was in- troduced In the year .1918. It in encouraging that this worltis con- tinued under the Hovinci-al Red Cross in extended form and is con- ducted by nurses who have had spec nl training and exiiertsnce in Chit Welfare and Public Health work. An appeal is now being made to the Provincial Govern- msnt by the lfied Cross Society for fiunde to assist in following up hsalthmducatiuu and we heartily ettmfiurt the application with the conviction that any reoaonsible expendmure for the conservation of the health of the citizens is in this be interests of the commun- Oodation.
