I —Dr. Beers, of Montreal, woke up one morning last week to find that he had made his name famous by his patriotic speech at Syracuse,--a report of which has been published in Tue Examiner. It is an ex act expression of the sentiments of the people of Canada—a very palpable text. Says the Halifax Mail :—An individual who, according tu several passengers’ state- ments, resembles the description given of ** Jack the Ripper,” arrived in the steamer Polynesian yesterday morning. During the entire voyage he made himself notice- able by his continual talk of the White- chapel murders. Yesterday morning, after having what little luggaye he owned ex- amined, he made up the wharf as fast as he could, Seven or eight years ago George Hutchinson, ap inmate of the asylum at Elgin, Lll., was very handy with his knife. After es caping from Elgin he was captured at Kanakee. He escaped from that place and murdered a disreputable woman in Chicagv, mutilating her in a way similar to the Whitechapel cases. He was returned tu Kankakee, but afterwards escaped and has been at large three or four years. The most intense amusement has been caused among all classes in London by the last week, of little Sir George Arthur on suspicion of being the White- chapel murderer. Summing is quite fashionable in London again, and it was {while engaged in this aristdcratic pastime that Sir George -was arrested. He put on a Slouch hat and an old shooting coat and went down to Whitechapel for a little fun. The policemen thought he resembled ‘Jack the Ripper,” and on seeing him talking with one of the women, at once ar- rested him. An hour or so after his arrest he was identified and released.
