Minister of Agricul- ture, was negligent in pressing the claims of this Province for compensation for the Dalton Sanator- ium and that his negligence in this regard cost the _Province many thousands of dollars, was convinc- mgly shown by Dr. W. J. McMillan in the course of the Budget debate Monday night. Dr. McMillan quoted the statements of other members of the dele. gation which discussed the Dalton Sanatorium with a. committee of the Federal Government at Ottawa, and these statements contradicted Mr. Lea's con- tention that no cash settlement had been offered at that time. Dr. McMillan also showed by Mr. Lea's own statements that though the Minister of Agri- culture had a copy of the agreement between the Province and the Federal Government in respect to the Sanatoriurn, he had never read the agreement and went to Ottawa without sufficiently posting him- self on the situation. Dr. McMiIIan’s remarks were occasioned by Hon. Mr. Lea’s refusal. in his speech on the Budget last week, and during the recent campaign for funds for the construction of a new Sanatorium, to accept any responsibility for the failure of the Bell Govern- ment to secure compensation for the Dalton San- atorium at a time when the Dominion Board of Re- parations was dealing with matters of this kind. Dr. Mcimlan said: The Minister of Alriculture took me io task a few days ago because. as he said. I was attempting ic lec- ture the House. I do not think that I was lecturing the House, but if I was I had a very good precedent for it, because the other night, in speak- ing on the budget. the Minister of Agriculture started in by lecturina The Guardian newspaper on all that they had said about him in connec- tion wlth the Dalton Banawrium. He says he never heard any men- tion of tho Dalton Banatorium claim until it was made last year durinl his absence from the House. The Miniaiar of Agriculture says he has a gcod memory. sometimes. however. ma; memory needs refreshing. and at times X endeavor to refresh and stimulate it. There is nothing like running the curivatqrcveritattimes I ml! remind mi hon. friend that in Avril. me. rpeakina on the Draft Address and Uiphaalaini tha need "In view of these facts it does seem a pity, Mr. Speaker. that the Dalton Banatorium was allowed to fo by the board. Hon. gentle- men speaking on the Draft Ad- dress have said: 'Weli, it was not much good. anyway. It was too big and unwieldy. and it was a mis- take thst it was ever tumed over to the Dominion Government! But we know that there was e. possi- bility of having that building ehanled. and that some negotia- tions went on about it. It is quite true that during the war it was turned into some sort of I C011- valaacant Home and that in that condition it was not amiable for the purposes of a Banatorium.
