Intercolonial Railway mismanagement was the subject of warm discussion, in which Mitcheil and Domville took leading parts. The Premier ealled upon his followers to vote down the motion for the return of the Jovernor General's expenses in British Columbia and Manitoba. He insulted Mitcheil by impugning his motives. Holton offered an amendment, which was carried. ——— Woarres ondence, We do not hald ourselves responsible fer the opinions or siatemzats of Corress pondents, Ze ihe E fitos of the Eecamiver : Sipn—The Aryus attempts to answer my letter of the 2Ist inst., and if unfounded assertions could b> considere | as argument the answer is certainty complete. I stated that “the Attorney General offered to try them (the rioters) together, provi led the accused gave up the right which the law allows them of each porem >torily challensing three jurors.” This statement the Aryus denies, alleging *‘we know whereof we affirm.” ‘* We have taken pains to aatisfy ourselves that our statement was correct, indeed wa did so hefore we published it.” The issue betwean us is now clear and dis-} tinct. and that your readera may see how ex- ceedingly uutrustworthy is the iaformation im- putel to the Aryus. I quote the following from the minutes of the Supreme Court. “ The Queen vs. Nicholas Collins and o*he7's. Attorney General moves that the Counsel be ealled upon to unite their challenges. Mr. C. Palmer refuses. Mr. Hod sson same. Attorney Ganeral replies : Tae Attorney Ganeral elects to try each prisoner sepirately, anil states he will com- masncs with Nicholas Collins.” it thus appears from the official record that my statement is correct; that the prisoners were triel separately because they refused to ‘ynite in their challenges,” that is because they would not surrender their right of chal- jevginz separately. The Argus is equally in error as to wiio 1s Yours truly, A Law StupeEsr. 25th Feb’y 1878. a -- -<>e@-o -——- To the Editor of the Eeaminer: Sir,—The daily Patriot has lately contained a number of queer letters over the signature of “Ward Four.” ‘The writer is evidently very angry that Mr. E. J. Hodgson was appointed a membher of the City School Board by the City | Council. ‘Ward Four” bas some reason to be angry. The nice little scheme that Ward Four and a few others hai all cat and dry to fleece the citizens was knocked higher than a kite by the appointment of Mr. Hodgson, The com fortabie little arrangement to build the new school building by days work is now litterally nowhere. ‘‘Ward Four’s” chance of pickings in that line is gone. He should console hi-nself however, with the reflection that, ‘‘the best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft aglee.” Instead of wasting his time in writing letters full of imbecile nonsense and spleen he shoul: o to work and earn a livelihood in some each way. Indeed, Mr. Editor, the thanks of the citizens are due the Council for the ap- pointment of the three gentlemen to the School Buard—none better could be found ia the city. Members of a corrupt ring, as “Ward Four” evidently is, may be disap- pointed and rave, but the city will save thousands of dollara by the recently made ap pointments. Feb, 26. Tax-Paver. —e oes eae To the Editor of the Examiner: Dear Sir,—Is it not to be deplored that so many ministers of the gospel are found identi- fying themselves with secret orders and societ- jes of questionable utility ? Is it not a fact that in forming secret organizations, the minister of the Parish is too often found taking the lead ? This is certainly not following the example set by the Divine Master. Surely it is a matter of eurprise among laymen to see ministers of the gospel of good will to ail men, binding them- selves, by solemn oath, to shew special tavor in certain cases to (perhaps) some of their own congregation. 1s not this favoritism i holy places? What preachers of righteousness should be found patronizing associations which invariably lead to rings and cliques is not less astonishing than true. Dr. Adam Clarke says : ‘He who preaches salvation to all should never make himself a party man ; otherwise he loses the confidence of his flock, and consequently the opportunity of doing good, &c. ” The sub- ject is well worthy the consideration of those who have charge of the discipline of the churches. Hoping to see the matter well vent lated ere long, I remain, yours truly, Urrma THULE. Feb. 14th, 1878. TY SS Hyrocriticat.—In J. H. Fletcher’r re- view of the speech of Charles Palmer, Esq., recently delivered in the Supreme Court, the writer says: ‘‘ We have taken the trouble to procure a copy of the Orange oath,” etc. Tae community well know that J. H. Fletcher is an Orangeman, but it is evident b, the paragraph alluded to that the Editor of the Argus would wish the public to be- lieve that he has no connection whatever with the Association. Surely Mr. F. is very Hpecicat! In the debate which followed Lord Derby spoke in decided terms concerning Russia's de. mand that an Ezyptian tribute shall be pledged for the payment of indemnity bonds. He said it might turn out that British interests would be very much involved in any elaim for pay- ment of a part of the indemnity for that tribute. He pomted out that the occupation of Armenia would bring the Russians no nearer to India. Her Majesty’s Government, when they adoptel the policy of neutrality, were _jaware that Russia must eventually triumph and very great changes ensue; it was unfair to blame the Government now, but a state of things had arisen which was necessary as a re- sult of the attitude of neutrality which the na- tion at the commencement of the war support- ed them in taking up. Lord Derby concluded by moving the pre vions question, which was ultimately agreed to without a division. A motion on ‘previous question” in British parliamentary practice is a formal mode of avoiding a division on the subject be- fore the House. Its adoption in this case is equivalent to a postponement of a vote on Lord Stratheden’s motion. Vienna, Feb. 26. The Political Correspondente announces that the Shah of Persia is expected in St. Peters- burgh shortly. The Czar hae offered him the hospitality of the Imperial Court. Bucuarest, Feb. 26. Prince Charles threatens to abdicate if Rus sia persists in claiming Bessarabia. In Rus- sian circles Prince Gregory Stourdza is men- tioned as the candidate for the throne of Prin- cipality. \ Arrer a good deal of careful attention we have succeeded in causing the Patriot to disclose some symptoms of returning honesty. When he borrows our telegrams or our paragraphs he has begun to acknowl- elge the fact. Let him persevere. His havit of uttering falsehoods is, however, ioo deeply seated for us to eradicate. He will persist in declaring that our “‘ tele- grams belong to Y. M. C. A.” If so, why did he credit the Examryer and not the Association with the only telegram that appeared in this morning’s issue of his paper? Our contemporary is evidently as unskilful in framing falsehoods as in steal- yr ) ng. At the Stipendiary Magistratea Court this morning Augustus Coombs was convicted on his own confession and fined sixteen dollars and costs for selling liquor without license on or about the eleventh of February, and fora like offense on the thirteenth of the same mouth, he was also convicted on his own confession and fined thirty-two dollars and costs. Robert Brown for obstructing the side- walks by leaving thereon two empty _half- bushel baskets was arraigned, fully convicted, and for the offense fined five cents and costs. James Anderson for exposing his person on the public streets of this city, was convicted, lectured, and fined 25 cents. Remember the Penny Readings in St. Peter’s Schoolroom to-night.
