Om-: of the bravest rescues at sea ever performed by n British Merchant ship was that which took place some months ago, when the Booth liner “Augustine” effected the rescue of the greater part. of the crew of the Greek steamer "Clemen- tine," According to a communication- the statements in which were subsequen- tly fnlly verified-which was addressed to the Merchant Service Guild by several passengers on board the “Augustine” during u heavy storm oil' Ushant, fell in with the “Clementine” flying signals of distress. The wind, ct- the time, was blowing wit-hhurrlcane force and there was u tremendous sea raging. Thereupon the “Augustine” was ninnoeuvred as close as safety would permit. to the sinking ship and, in the face of almost rnsuper- nple difficulties, n boat. was launched in charge of the Chief Oflicer. J. W. Harris, with u volunteer crew and put off to the rescue. This boat service was of ri moat, dangerous character-in fact, none of the passengers expected to see her return. When she got. close to the sinking ship. she was compelled to keep away a little to avoid being smashed ho pieces agulnst the “Clementlne's" side, and the crew were appealed to _jump into the sea so that. they might be picked up by the rescuing boat. This, however, they would not do, and the boat eventually had to return. Shortly afterwards the Greek ship sank. Cupiain Forbes, of thc "Augustine," called for nnother volunteer- crew which consisted of ihc same Officer and men as previously, and `with desper~ ate efforts they succeeded in saving from amongst the wreckage four lives. The bout having returned, Captain Forbes adjusted his ship so ns to drift towards others ofthe Greek crew who were cling ing to the wreckage and Hosting away to leewurd. Four men were espied, but they were in fur to exhausted a condition to help themselves in the way of clinging to life-lines which were thrown to them. These men, according to the passengers. would inevitably have been drowned han it not been for the galluntry of the Chief, Second, and Third Officers of the “Aug- ustine” who themselves plunged into thi’ water, tied life-lines round the men who were then hnulcd on board. Through the kindness of theGreck Consul ln Liver- pool, B. A. Mnladrlnos, the Merchant Service Guild were nblc to place the whole of the circumstances before the Greek Government Asa result of this. Mr. Malundrinos has now informed the Guild that the King of Greece, as n mark of high admiration of the bravery and humanity displayed by. those on the “Augustlne," has signed a decree at At.~ hens conferring upon Captain Henry Forbes and J. W. Harris, his Chief Officer, the Gold Decoration of the Order ofthe Redeemer, whilst J. Fanning, W. T. Watson, and Mr. Buck, Second, Third and Fourth Officers respectively, have had the Silver Decoration of the same Order conferred upon them. The Gui'd are hopingtomake the presentation ol these Decorations in public form ln due time. The Decoration conferred on Captain Forbes and Mr. Harris Is one class lower only than that conferred recently upon the Lord Mayor of London bythe King of Greece.
