West Remembers Early History CALGARY ICPJ-History is be- ing remade and rememh ed in southern Alberta. At Fort Macleod. a town just west off Lethbridge. the first Northweu Mounted Police fort in Alberta has been rebuilt at a cost of between 560,000 and 575.000. At Lelhbridge a atone cairn will mark the site of the last battle between Indian tribes. one of Western Canada's great bbtoric events. The restored Fort Macleod is 223 feet long and 175 feet wide, with a stockade 13 feet high. It has been hailed u we of the ma- jor tourist attractions h the pro- whee. A cairn was eariiier erected stl Fort M a c L e o d commanorating ''the arrival in October. "Their coming brought law and cder into a i and lawless country and laid the foundations of those social conditions which later made possible the settle- ment ol the country and the birth of its cities. towns. villages and peaceful Ianns." OPENED JULY 1 The restored wooden fort is only a short distance from the original site of the 1874 ataockade. Its of- ficial opening was on Dominion Day. Dlrecbd by the Research Coun- cil of Alberta. it is hoped that out of the study will come eventually a means of predictllll hail storms and. perhaps. methods for lessen- ing the damage they cause. WIDESPREAD DAMAGE Dr. R. M. Elafson. secretary of the council's advisory committee on bail. estimated in an interview that ball storms in 1955 cost Al- berta farmers as much as 570,- Saskatcliewan'a losses probably were as much as 330,000,000. he said. while damage in Manitoba posssibly was half that in Saskat- chewan. Insurance covers only a fraction of the loss. In 1956. the Alberta hail insurance board reports it paid out in claims Sl.06l,000. But the board estimates it insures only 15 per cent of the province's approximately 14,000,000 arable acres. Private insurance companies protect an added five to to per cent of the total acreage. This year": study started June 1 and will continue to Sept. I. Hall storms occur with greatest fro quency in July and begin to taper off in August, Dr. Elafson said. TO REPORT ON STORMS About 15,000 farmers will pro- vide information in the study. Each has received a supply of postcards from the council. when a ball storm hits his area, a farmer is asked to record the duration of the storm, size of bail stones (pea. grape. golfball) and If the ball was ompanied by lightning and wind. This information is being cor- related wlth that obtained by a special radar unit set up at the Penhold, Alta. RCAF base. de- signed to "see" cloud fromations and storms. rather than penetrat- ing through such weather condi- tions. The actual area in which farmers are being asked to report hail conditions is a roughly rec- tangular block 150 miles by U miles in central Alberta and within the circumference of the radar's sweep. With a radius of 100 miles. the radar equipment will scan an area that includes Edmonton on the northern perimeter and High River, 35 miles south of Calgary, on its southern limit. Thus it can plot on maps the course and size of storms before they reach the hail reporting area and after they leave it. START IN FOOTHILLS Alberta seems to have a "breed- ing ground" for hail - producing thunderstorms. Dr. Elafson said. This is located in the foothills of the Rockies 85 miles southwest of Edmonton. From there storms ap- pear to fan out along "three gen- eral paths across the province. Dr. Elfason aald hau also seems to result from a series of storms rather than one continuous storm travelling a given course. This would account for the way hail storms tend to "jump." Another theory is that ball is re- lated to tornadoes. Rather than a tornado devastating an area under certain climatic conditions, the West seems to suffer a hall storm. One practical attempt to lessen the severity of bail attacks is be- lng conducted this year on Itll.000 acres in central Alberta. Within this block. located in the southern half of the atudy'a re- porting area. silver iodide crystals are being burned in generators on the ground when a thunderstorm threatening hall ,, are. Smoke given off by the genera- tors is expected to so effect at- mospheric conditions that any ball will be changed to rain before it begins to fall. It was decided to try the silver Iodide generators following a test last year by private subscription on !l0.000 acres in the Dldsbury and Three Hills dlatrlcis. Normally the target for many storms, the protected districts suffend no major hall although storms flattened crops In adjacent municipalities. MODERN FUMIGATING Isrvlcs throughout the Island. it 1.
