Will the Patriot and Journal make the amende honorable. j--liiniipslaly Mr. Joux Lerace is out with his fusual poem on Dominion Day. It contains some very good ideas and reads smoothly. The prisoner had no counsel, and the Court instructed the Sheriff to procure one from any of the young lawyers who usually throng the Court-room,; but that dignitary returned the order ‘* non est inventis ;” consequently, the prisoner had to plead his own case. The evidence for the rosecution being concluded, the prisoner was asked for his defence. He had none, and the jury, after a very short absence, found hit vailty. Parsons does not appear to be “ all there ’—in fact, he is a ‘‘crank.” The trial of civil cases commenced this evening. _— > — Tue Tavernier-Lewis Company appeared at the Academy of Music on Friday and Satur- day evenings and at the Saturday Matinee to very fair audiences. Encouraged by their success, and at the request of many prominent citizens, they have concluded to remain two nights lo , and we arerure their houses will be qoiked as their merits deserve This js decidedly the best company that has ever yet visited our Island ‘The Mighty Dollar” on Friday evening, was well played. Mr, W. ¥. Burroughs, althoughin a comparatively un- important part, stll leat great assistance by his careful conscientious acting. Mr, Taver- nier, as the Hon Bardwell Slote, was im- mense ‘by a large majority” kept the audience in a constant rear of laughter, as did Mrs. Tavernice im her capital impersonation of Mrs. Gilflory, the ly y who had travelled all over Europe. Libby Dear and Charlie Brood her basbiul swaip, found excellent representation in Mr. and Mrs. Horace Lewis, while the minor parts were all care ully rendered. At the wtinee Gilbert's fanniest epee. “Engage,” was charmingly rendered. r. Burrough’s as Cheviot Hill, the much engaged oung man, was perfect. Mrs. Tavernier as Belinda and Mr. Tavernier as Belvawney were excellent, Miss Fairfax as “Vinnie Sym- person looked charming, and acted the part capitally. The audience was a good one for a matinee performagge—not 4 usual thiog here—and were all délighted. “‘ Two Nights in Rome,” the play of Saturday evening.drew alarge house. It is full of strong characters and striking situations, all of which are done full justice to by the Company. This evening ** Rosedale,” one of the most famous p'ays of modern days, with Mr. Burroughs in his most celebrated character—‘‘ Elliot Grey ” will be given. This play was produced by Mr. Buar- roughs in Halifax three years since, and then drew the largest audience ever befure or since gathered together within the walls of the Academy of Music of that city. It was played by the present Company 12 Halifax a few weeks since, making a pronounced hit, and has been presented by them to crowded and delighted audiences in several cities on their route, It will be given this evening in its entirety, and should be witnessed {by all who are lovers of good acting and fine effects.
