A peasant named Adam Gawrydo, whose property is in a -mall village near Zbaraz, in Galicia, cut his own son’s throat with a kitchen knife by mistake. Some weeks ago a Jewish merchant, Solomon Bark, bought old Gawrydo’s stock of honey, and paid 50 florins in advance, to make the bargain valid. When the time for delivering the honey came, the peasant declared he could not keep his word, and was prepared to pay any damages to the merchant that the Rabbi might decide. They both went to the Rabbi, who said the peasant must pay the merchant ten florins damages. This he did most willingiy, and they both went away together. Of the way home they stopped ata wayside inn and did not leave it till night. It began to rain and the peasant asked the merchant to pass the night in his house. The merchant accepted, and they went home together. The peasant prepared a bed of straw in the barn and when the merchant had lain down, went to his own room after carefully locking the barn door. This frightened the mer- chant so much that he got up, felt his way about until he found a second door, which was bolted from the inside, left the barn and started to walk back to the inn. In the meantime the son of the peasant returned home half drunk, and finding the barn door open walked in and dropped on to the bed of straw prepared for the stranger. He was soon fast asleep. The merchant on his way to the inn met a gendarme, who asked him where he was going so late. Barb told him all that had happened and the gendarme, thinking he had a dangerous man before him who was lying to avuid suspicion, asked him to go with him to the peasant’s house. There they found Gawrydo in the act of washing his hands which were stained with blood. When he saw them he exclaimed, “Surely [killed you am instant ago.” The gend- arme searched the house, and in the barn found the son of the peasant dead, with his throat cut. The peasant was imme- diately arrested. Very often cz andidates are put | about them. The candidatea should be ‘and thus have an opportunity to judge the importance of Push as illustrated in the following from a western paper : VOL 34.—NO. 33 ‘LETTERS 10 THE EDITOR. POLITICA L NOTES. Sin, —Notwithstanding that a Dominion men in the field az soon as possivle, as in the field about the last moment, and the majority of the people know very little before the people for one year if possible of their ability and integrity. There are no doubt many aspirants, but the can didates should be men of ability and integrity, able to cope with the great questions of the day. This province should be proud to have such able re pre- sentatives at the Federal Capital as Hone. Senators Ferguson, Prowse and Me- Donald, and Hons. Mesere, McLean and McDonald. There are very few men to- day in the Federal Parliament whose ability as statesmen exceeds that of Hon. Seoator Ferguson ; but, sir, I believe we have a man in West Queen’s who if he were elected would make a represen- tative “worthy of his steel,” I refer to Doctor R. McNeill of Stanley Bridge. 1 believe that if he were elected he would prove himself one of the ablest stateamen the province has ever sent to the Federal Parliament, and I further believe that if be should be the candidate of the Liberal- Conservative party for West Queen’s for the next zeneral election, as I trust he will, and that the electors were true to their interests, as I am sure they will, he would certainly be elected hy a handsome majority. It is sureiy time the province would send men to Ottawa in sympathy with the Conservative party and they will certainly be the dominant party in Canada after the next general election, too —with a little Independent element, per- haps;—men in sympathy with Canada’s great and progressive Party, and therefore sincere in their demands—not weather: cocks changing w ti every wind and gale like the so-called present defunct Liberal Party. East Prince, too, has a man who, if he be the Liberal-Conservative candidate for that district, as I have no reason to doubt but what he will from what I know of the district, will be elected by a very large majority, aud will make an excellent representative, viz., Richard Hunt, E-q., of Summerside. Lots 67,29 and 3) will give him handsome majorities, and I be- lieve the Prince County section will, too, though not personally acquainted ia all of it. East Queen’s should also select their man. They have several good men, but | think they woald be making an excellent choice by nominating Alexander Martin, Esq., of Valleyfield, as their candidate. Then with Hon. John McLean, Doctor R, McNeill, Mesers. Richard Hunt and Alex- ander Martin in the House of Commons, and Hon. Mesers. Ferguson, Prowse and McDonald in the Senate, this Province would have excellent representatives, and would ere long have a representative in the Canadian Cabinet. May it be so at the next general election. Yours truly, Vox. Charlottetown, Aug. 6, 1894. LS i Tm NOTHING LIKE PUSH, The east can well learn from the west Push your city. Push your town.
