Farm Training In Britain Britain is Ofgfllllliflg an additional school designed to provide facilities for agricultural education on the brondcst possible lines for, in addition to covering the whole field of farming studies, it embraces research and instruction in forestry, horticulture and veterinary science. The plan is being sponsored by the University of Edinburgh in co-operation with other organiza- tions of importance in the agricultural world. 3,000 acres of land In Midlothian-a cross-sec- tion which is typical of practically the whole of Scotland-have been acquired and will provide the necessary variety of ground required for really comprehensive trciniiig in all forms of rural economy. Within this area a research in- itruction and field experiment will be correlat- rd. Farm mechanics and the testing of agri- cultural machinery under ordinary working con- ditions will have an important place in the cur- riculum while there will also be g special school for blocksmiths. Particular attention is to be given the new system of management whereby forestry and farming are closely interrelated in such a way as to provide jobs at all seasons for the casual rural worker. Livestock production and animal breeding will be studied too while a course in the economics of agriculture will im- press on the trainee how essential the knowledge of this subject is for rcaliy efficient farming. Exotic Animals An enterprising East Griqualand (South Af- rical farmer imported a consignment of earth- worms by plane from the United States to aerate and improve his soil—-but the South African De- partment of Agriculture refused to allow the worms to remain in the country, because they are "exotic animals." The department suggest- ed that, as they are still in good shape, the worms could be returned to the United States. The farmer, C. Lupton-Smith, of Kark's Post, read a lot about earthworms and the good they could do, but all his efforts to breed local varieties had failed. Apparently no one else, even the Department of Agriculture, ever ex- perimented with worms in South Africa, so he decided to impo'rt a special variety from Ohio. They are still being held by government offici- als as "prohibited immigrants." Mr. Lupton-Smith received a-letter from ths Chief Inspector, Plant Regulatory Serviceszwhich said that other applications to import exotic animals" had been refused. Dr. T. J. Naude, chief of the Division of En- tomology, Pretoria, said that the importing of exotic animals is forbidden, and is only permit- ted under certain circumstances under very strict control. Danger lies in impcrting with them new diseases and pests. Important food Conference At the third session of the Food and Agri- culture Organization of th-i.
