Firth of Forth, on the. east of Scot-
land, acrou to the`River Clyde, on
the west, have been definitely ar-
franged. The canal will cost $50,-
000,000, but powerful support isex-
pected from the British Government.
One of the great engineering features
of the scheme will be the carrying of
the canal through the high ground
near the Loch Lomond-end. Fre-
quent passing places will be made. _
An indication of the saving indis-
tance that would be ellected by the
canal will be gained from the follow-
ing figures: From the Clyde to ports
east of England, and northwest ol"
Europe the distance saved would be
from 529 miles to ,238 miles. From
the Firth of Forth to ports on the
V west coast of Scotland, northwest of
Il-Ingland, Ireland, America, and the
i Mediterranean the distance saved
would be from 487 .to 141 lniles.
