Ina letter to Erastus Wiman, Senator Sherman says the McKinley Bill is not especially aimed at Canada, but is general in its application to ali countries. He be- lieves that with a little forbearance and moderation on both sides of the line, the feeling will become universal in the United States that special arrangements for reciprocity and trade should be entered in- to between the two countries. Whatever feeling there is in the United States for an- nexation, he said, grew pnrely out of the belief that annexation would be better for the people of both countries. ————— A Sham Battle. Harirax, Sept. 24. The sham battle to-day between the attacking fleet and the detending army was in all respectsa sham. The Government have received peti- tions from Manitoba signed by four thou- sand persons asking that the act passed by the Provincial Legislature abolishing the dual language and separate schools should be disallowed.
