Twenty-two years ago Bruce Stewart, a master machinist, ‘and
Andrew McNair, a Scotch engineer finding themselves the possessors' of
$1,500 each decided to pool their capital, energy and brains and start a ma-
chine and boiler shop. _ ' ’
They secured a lease of space on the Charlottetown Steam Naviga-
tion Compan_v’s'wharf, put up a shop and “went to it.” They met with the
usual amount of success and discouragement but by ai thorough knowledge
of und a strict attention to their business they were able to show consider-
able progress year by year. __ , '
_ Seven years ago they found themselves offered more business than
they could handle with their capital and they decided to incorporate, take
in some more capital and enlarge the business. This was done andafor six
_vears they paid a yearly dividend 'of 6_per cent. and in 1917 this was in-
creased to 7 per cent. Besides doing' this they added new buildings and
much new machinery. In the fall of 1916 they purchased the entire wharf
property of The Chuidottetown Steam Na\'igal;ioii Company together with
all buildings so that today they own one of the best equipped plants of its
kind iii the Maritime Provinces and it site uiiequzilledranywhere. The ex-
tension of the business seven _vears -.igti has proven wise and profitable.
One of the money making' features of the business has been the manu-
facture of the famous Imperial gasoline engine. Bruce Stewart as si machi-
nist and Andrew McNair as an engineer were among the best in their pro-
fessionzind when they decided to inani_ifnctiii'et un engine they also decided
it should be the best that they knew howto build. That they have succee-
ded is shoivn by the steadily increasing demand until today the company
li.‘isioi'dei's for double as many engines as they can build with their present
facilities. They have also an increasing' demand for very large engines as
auxilizi1°_v power for vessels and in order to take care of all this business
which is offered it has been found necessary to put up a new machine shop_
and install considerable modern iiiaehinery which will very materially -re-
;lii_c§e thescost of production and ensure largei' uct earniiigs for the share-
io t ers.
This is _the purpose for which the $50,000.00 new capital is required.
The nianageiiieiit of the business will be the same _that has built___it up from
its small beginning twent_v-two years- ago___to its immense proportions _of to-
day. _Itwill still be a Bruce Stewart and Andrew McNair run business but
to this has been added the financial knowledge of Frank R. Heartz of Char-
lottetown, Senator John McLean of Sotiris and C. L. McKay the efficient Sec-
retary of the company. In the shops are young and progressive heads in
charge of the different departments. The selling end is looked after by
I<`i'zink Stewart whohas done much todevelop the business.
This is the only plant of its kind in the Province and its future is as-
sured. _It has more business today than it can handle and the after the wat'
period is bound to be one of construction, _especially in metals. S"
An investment in this company, however large tirsmall, must prove a
profitable oiic as _aside from its steady dividends the shares should increase
