AKD MARTIN, ’ o of the Horse and Cattle Powders sold here are worthless trash. He says that Sheridan's McDonavp’s (se6 3i. beleved general was still alive. B. He was inthe habit, without Childrens’ Hosiery at J. ever Condition Powders are absolutely pure and compromising bis dignity, of mixing familiarly with his mea. ‘He used to eat withthe common spoon out of the camp kettles, and no one was ever more ‘careful to see that the camp kettle was io in its place, Lt was not only the superb)! military gen- uis whicn they admired, but his sym- vathy, his affection, his . homely Rroclicvinabd. Thefe was nO pride in him—with the poorest he was friendly as with the most powerful.” With his money he was most lavish, giving away the whole of his pay to the soldiers, and those of his ofieers who were in need. The following tale will serve as a proof of the his men :— “Skobeleff went to visit a of soldiers b idly wounded, moribunds recognized him. ‘Oh,’ said he. ‘there is our one, our Skobeleff,’ Tieothers heard the name, ‘Hurray, harrah!’ they tried to cry out ; so weak and. wavering were their voices, it re- minded one of death more than life. One of the wounded soldiers who bad to be operated on had both legs and an arm to be amputated. Chloroform was offered. ,Why do you ebject? exe claimed the doctors. ‘I cannot,’ re- plied the man: ‘rather ¢et-me smoke a pipe durivg the operation. J exnnot take chloroform. I tell you Iam a Skobeleveis’—belonging to Skobeleff’s division.’ Kind as he was tohis soldiers, he could be stern enough when necessary. Once a working party in the trenches, assailed by a murderous fire frem the Turks, fei] back and sought shelter in the trenches! Skobeleff exelaimed: ‘You are frightened. . . .Your comrades are working, and you are frightened. Form inrank,’ The obey- ed ‘March back to your work, and that at once, If not God be witness if I do not make you go through your drill before the Turkish trenches. You know me. Itis enough.’ They re- sumed their werk without hesitation. His daring exposure was not due to recklessness or vanity, but to a desire to set an example and inspire confi- dence. Though, however, he exposed himself, he sought to spare the lives of others! “Once he went to the front, and turning round, perceived a group ef his officers. ‘“‘Why are you here?” hecried. “Youare not necessary.” “We will not let you die alone,” they said. He understood their stratagem, smiled, and returned to another spot.”’ The most ably conducted and auda- cious of Skobeleff’s campaigns was that in which he captured Geok Tepe and conquered the Akhal Tekkes. To describe it would be to write a military essay, Which would be out of a place here. The following extracts, how- ever, from Skobeleff’s instructions to his officers when withdrawing near Gosk Tepe will be read with interest and profit :— ‘The main principle of Asiatic tac tics is to preserve close formutions. Long thin lines, in which troops easily get out of hand and separated into small groups which cannot obey the wil! of the common leader, prevent the latter from opposing strong fermations, in which the superior dsicipline and mo- bility of our troops tell most to sudden er unexpected hostile attacks. . . , The attecks of the enemy's cavalry is to be met by corresponding changes of front, if necessary, and by volleys at short ranges. I recommend even squares (battallion or other), when circumstances permit. . . Mitrail- leuses are to be exclusively in connec- tion with infantry or dismounted cavelry like the former regimental guns, al! Other guns are to be kept in reserve, s@ that they may be used io masses when required; ard so good results muy be Obtained by a few dozen good guns working under one man’s will.”—Lon- dou Atheneum. as devotion of trapspe t One of the fhe Great French Remedy, Dr. LeDuc’s Periodical Pills. A MARVELOUS STORY TOLD IN TWO LETTERS, ** 28 Cedar St., New FROM THE SON: “Yosscs.Se 22% “Gentlemen: My father resides at Glover, Vt. He has been a great sufferer from Serof- ula, and the inclosed letter will tell you what a marvelous etfect Ayer's Sarsaparilla has had in his case. I think his blood must have contained the humor for at least ten years; but it did not show, except in the form of a serofulous sore on the wrist, until about five years ago. From a few spots which ap- peared at that time, it gradually spread so as to cover his entire body. I assure you he was terribly afflicted, and an object of pity, when he began using your medicine, Now, there are few men of his age who enjoy as good health as he has. I could easily name fifty persons who would testify to the facts in his case. Yours truly, W. M. PHILLIPS.” “Tt is botha FROM THE FATHER: picoctce ana a duty for me to state to you the benefit I have derived from the use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Six months ago 1 was completely covered with humor and scrofulous sores. The caused an ineessant and intolerable itching, and the skin cracked s0 as to cause the blood to flow in many places whenever I moved. My suiferings were great, and my life a burden. I commenced the use of the SARSAPABILLA in April last, and have used it regularly since that time. My condition begaa to improve at once, The sores have all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every respect — being now able to do a good day’s work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire what has wrought such a cure in my case, and I tell them, as I have here tried to tell you, AYER’S SARSAPARILLA. Glover, Vt., Oct. 21, 1882. Yours gratefully, HiRnAM PHILLIPS.” hy a terribi? hume AYER’s SARSAPARILLA cures Scrofula and all Scrofulous Complaints, Erysip- elias, Eczema, Ringworm, Blotches, Sores, Boils, Tumors, and Eruptions of the Skin.
