The following are just some of the scholarships and bursaries which are currently available: The Albert Bing Ching Young Memorial Scholarship (full-tuition) The province of PEI is paying tribute to one of the major contributors of the Island’s university community by setting up a memorial scholarship in his honour. The Albert Bing Ching Young Memorial Scholarship is an annual full-tuition scholar- ship awarded to a resident of Prince Edward Island who has attended an Island high school and is entering the first year of full-time studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. It shall be given on the basis of academic merit to a student who is not already on scholarship, and who has demonstrated financial need. Application forms are available at the Regis- trar’s Office. The deadline for applications is October 31, 1996. The Austin A. Scaies Scholarships Three scholarships are available for second-year students at UPEI These scholarships are open to rural students from Prince Edward Island. One will be given each year to a student from each of the three counties of the Province. Awards will be made by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of financial need and achievement in the first year of a university program. Application forms may be picked up at the Registrar’s Office. The deadline for applications is October 31, 1996. Margaret (Mullin) Griffin Bursary ($500) This bursary is awarded to any Island single parent (male or female) who isa full-time student taking at least three courses per semester in the School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island. It shall be awarded by application to the Scholarship and Awards Committee on the basis of financial need after the first year of study. Applicants must have maintained an average of 65% in their nursing courses in the first year of study. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office or at the School of Nursing. The price is now lower, and it includes hotel (with shared fa- cilities), breakfast, package in- surance, tickets to two RSC plays at the Barbican Theatre, aseven-day London Transport pass (For travel on buses and tube), and flight from Charlottetown on Air Canada. (Price is $61 less for flight from Halifax.) Deposits of $250 must go to Shannon Murray (Main 138, smurray@upei.ca) as soon as possible to ensure places. The remainder is due January 3. The Honourary Degree Committee is seeking names of candidates for honourary de- grees conferred at Convoca- tion in May, 1997. Eligible are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada living in Canada as of December 1, 1996, who a) hold, or expect to hold at the time they take up the award, a degree in science or engineer- ing from a university whose academic standing is accept- able to NSERC; and b) will pursue full-time postgraduate study and research at the mas- ter's or doctoral level in the natural sciences or engineer- ing in the following year.
