Iowa (AP) Radio waves from the sun can now be harnessed by an electronic in- strument to do all-weather naviga- tion work for ships and planes. Arthur Collins. president of the Collins Radio Co.. of Cedar Rap- ids. disclosed today. The instrument is the first radio sextant, an electronic successor to the hand-held sextant used for cen- turies by marlne navigators. But where its predecessor required a clear sky to obtain "position fixes." the radio sextant relies only on the sun's radio waves which pene- trate rain. snow and cloud cover. Developed for the U. S. Navy bureau of ships, the radio sextant I vessel. The U. S. Air Force also has sponsored an airboorne version of the sextant. The projects have been under security wraps for several years. 'Using a sensitive radio receiver. the instrument uses a small dish antenna to detect micro-waves from the sun, thus supplying data by which a navigator can readily pin-point his crait's precise latit- ude and longitude. wsuran - ramcsrss. sron' has undergone tests on a navaly M a . :...:.. New York Stocks NEW YORK (AP)-The stock market punched ahead last week to new bull market peaks. There was a general rush to buy on the part of traders. speculators. investors. and the public at large, as business boiled up to t.he,great- est totals in the last 3115 years. It Was the fifth. straight weekly ad- vance for the market, In the last. 10 months there have been only; a few downward correc- tions along the way. That is un- usual for the stock market. The usual .thing is for the market periodically to retrace one-third to two-thirds of its previous rise in a reaction in order to consolidate its gains for a new push ahead, Last week volume hit a total of l2.828.000 s h a r e s. the greatest amount of business for one week since early in February of 1951. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IThere has been increasing public participation in the market in re- cent weeks as contrasted with pro- fessional trading or the orders of such institutions as mutual funds or insurance companies and banks. Furthermore. trading emphasis type blue chips to the more spec- ulative and lower priced stocks. But words oi caution now are coming from many Wall Street brokers. That doesn't mean a crash is just around the corner. But it does mean that some oi the signs of a general reaction are in the mak- ing. As one broker explained. the more the public becomes aware of the possibilities of a reaction. the greater are the c h a n c e s oi weathering the blow with sound stocks. SUEGED AHEAD A week ago the market surged ahead in its final session to a high for the year, but on Monday and Tuesday the brakes were set. Wed- nesday's market was higher again, and volume was the best oi the week. The Thursday market brought one grand rush of trading at higher prices that sent volume to 3,000,000 shares. greatest in the last 15 months. Friday's market found irading' short of the previous day. Prices sagged a little despite a late rally and closed on average only a shade below the peaks of I29. May Put Iranian Oil On Market TEI-IRAN, Iran Reuters - Tin- ance Minister All Amini announced Sunday night agreement in prin- ciple has been reached between Iran and eight intematlonal oil companies planning to put Iranian all back on world markets. "The negotiating stage now is ended and the agreement must be drafted by 12 international law and financial experts," he said. "This should take no more than five days, working day and night." A separate agreement on the compensation issue between Iran and the Anglo-Iranian Oil Com- pany remains to be finally agreed upon but Amini said he believes this will take only two more days. He said compensation for Angio- Iranlan for the Abadan installa- tions nationalized by Iran in i951 would be "very little-much less then expected-probably less than 530,000,000." Today, surrounded by bales of newly-cut alfalfa, Reeve A. M. Adamson of Strathcona turned the sympollc first sod on the plant site. Construction is expected to be com- pleted by Sept. 1 next year.
