BMALLWOOB, ‘Sec’y-Treasurer, F.L HASZARD, ee President Special attractions in addition to the Ex-. bAILY BKAMIN2AR ee HIGHER DUTIES WITH HIGH- | the ER PRICES. The customs revenue for the fiscal vear ending June 30, 1900, was $28,- 374,148, an amount considerably in excess cf the customs revenue for any previous year. For the year 1899 the amount was $25,734,228, and in 1896 it was $20,219,037. The highest amount of revenue obtained from cus- toms in any year previous to 1899 was in the year 1890, when it amounted to $24,014,908. The increase in revenue since 1896 is largely due to the fact that higher prices are paid for almest all import- ant articles. The duties are now chiefly ad valorem and consequently as the prices rise the duties rise. Wren the Liberals say that the duties are lower now than they were under the Conservative administratien this fact must be taken into consider- ation, that while there was a slight re- duction in therate duties it has been more than offset in most cases by the rise in prices. If all the duties were specific they would remain -the same no matter how much the prices in- creased, but the principle of ad valorem duties having been generally adopted, the tariff is actually higher on many articles then it wasa_ few years ago, owing to the general increase of prices. Consequently most of our manufactur- ing industies have just as high protec- tion now as they had in 1896 and some of them have more, but if a period of word-wide depression should come with fallicg prices, the duties be- ing chiefly ad valorem, would decrease in amount at the time they would be most needed for the protection of home industries. Then the change that has been made in the Canadian tariff by the Laurier Government, al- though slight, would be feft by the manufacturers. — Star. ——. THE DANGEROUS PARTY. Mr. Tarte told the students on Fri- day night that it would be an Imperial calamity if the Laurier Government was defeaced in the coming elections. Mr. Chamberlain is understood to be much worried lest there should be a return to power at Ottawa ofthe men who added Prince Edward Island to the original Confederation, who pur- chased the Northwest from the Hud- son’s Bay Company, who made the ar- rangement by which British Columbia became a part of Canada, who sup- pressed the anti-British risings of 187071 and 1885, who secured the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the putting on seeerelieneen etter amt acetate rae area C6 VLorr This signature is on every box of the genuine Laxative Bromo-Quinine taviets the remedy that emres a eold in ome day CHARLOTTETOWN SEPTEMBER 7 ounenel en —_— nel A Pacific ocean of the {Japan and China and Australian steamship lines, who inaugurated in Can ada the Pacific cable scheme; and the movement for Imperial penny postage, and voted ia Parliament for the sead- ing of Canadian troops to share in the South African war.
