Sept. ll-(AH-Church informants announced ‘yegtgr. dBY that 4,900 Roman Catholic Priests have signcd a defiant de- claration rejecting and protestlag the Czechoslovak government's pro. posed church law, The Roman Catholic Church thus fired its first round in the battle over the bill which would legalize state control over appointments. tinances and administrative affairs of all churches in Czechoslovakia. The Communist government dis- closed detailsof the measure July 15 and proposes u. bring it up be- fore Parliament next month. Archbishop Joseph Beran, who has described himself as a captive in his palace, and his Bishops ai- ready have a ‘emned the pro- posed law as a restriction on re- ligious freedom, ' The priests‘ declaration was made public by church sources, to- gether with} statement which said ‘l0 per cent of Czechoslovsklifs 1.- 000 "Romari Catholic clergy have signed the document. The government-controlled radio made no mention of the protest in its news broadcast tonight, but Czechoslovak radio listeners heard about it on the BBC and Voice of America newscasts. The government had no com- ment on the declaration today, The Communist-controlled press has steadily represented . the church bill as a "generous, esture". be- cause it would prove te support of religion by dfferinl to lily all church salaries. Sept._ l1 —— (CP) - At long last the stars and medals for service in the Second World War are ready ior distribution. The Veteran Affairs Department. announced today it will begin Oct. 1 mailing the campaign medals and stars to more than 1,- 000,000 men and women who serv- ed in the armed forces and mer- chant navy, Distribution will involve a total of 3,100,000 stars and medals with an additional 524.000 clasps signifying at least 60 ‘days service outside Canada. In most cases the veterans will have to write to the department for their medals. ‘The reason for this is that we do not have up-to-date addresses for thousands of veterans. Veter- ans Affairs Minister Gregg said. “There are many thousands who have gone quietly back into civilian life and who have not been in contact with the depart- ment since their discharge." To make it easy for applica- tion, special postage-free cards‘ will be placed in all Canadian post offices. These cards will also be available in all branches of the Canadian Legion, Merchant seamen and former members of the merchant navy are advised to apply tn the De- partment of Transport at Ottawa, submitting with their application their certificate of discharge. As for members of the perman- ent force, they'll receive their de- corations throuah the Department of National Defence. Mr. Gregg said the next-of-kin of deceased veterans will be eligible to receive the stars and medals which would have been awarded to the veteran. A WANTED.
