Taken altogether, the proceedings of athe House, to a listener, pave a tendency te produce soporific influences. But, seriously, speaking the business of the house is proceediag wery quietly. On another occasion dogs. gore shall lay before curreaders the result oftheir labors, feeiing satisfied, for the present, that our article is quite as interesting as the Parlia- mentary Summaries given, ia the Patriot. — << Al THE EDUCATION QUESTION. _—_—- Tae change of the “ National System " in J-eland to State Schoolism ,arose, in a great part, trom the poverty of the country in edu- cational resources, which threw more work, and, consequently, more pewer iuto the hands g the Central Commission; but it has been) caused also by the active influence ofa certain number of the Commissioners, foremost among #hom was the Protestant grchbishop of Dublin, Dr. Whately, whose beau ideal was a complete system of State Education. ‘This -#ystem would, of course, under such guidanee, be framed with the intention of making it as phctle Catholic as possible, and tinged by a’ certain leaning towards a negative rationalism in religion, or what is sometimes called * general Christian.” Thesteps by.whi¢hrthe system was develcped were very gradual. “T\ @ necessity for local contributions was given uy, aod the teachers thus became wholly the yperd officers of the board. A centval training ac hogl-rras established, in which teachers were sto go through a brief course of -+iaining to, prepare them for examination. At first this was entirely unconnected with residence or anything like a complete course of education ; it was merely a short specific training into which the question ef religious teaching scarcely entered. Gradually this was de- ‘veloped into complete training Colleges in Dublin, undertaking the whole education of fthe future teachers, an education which, as weligion was excluded, was at least not re- liyious, or vegatively irreligious. These were supplemented by Agricultural Colleges at Giasnevin, equally undertaking the whole charge of the young and omitting religion. At ——— of the country schools were weally mixed, Whe training and model .schogis were not in stitutions in which the secular.instruction was united, and the religious separaie, but one in which secular ipstrection and training was alone giyen, even an allusion to religion being excluded. Thus primary and middle educa- tion in Ireland ybecame governmental ; and it has since become known that the object of the principal agent in making the Nativnal System what it now is, was,-by,s'egrees, to undermine the faith of the Irish people by bringing up the yauth of the country so as to be indifierent to religious principles. Our School System has all the defects of the Irish National System, with none of jts advantages. ~~ Ix another column w3.publish a letter from “A Wesleyan,’’ from svhich it is evident that our school .system does not provide schools calculated to give a “ thorough good edu. eation,’* even to Protestant childcen. If it did, the Wesleyaus would not, certainly, be under the necessity of getting upa school of their own. Is there no school in Charlotte. town wherein Wesleyar boys can receive a “thorough good education?” Where is the Pringe.of Wales College, the Grammar School, jand the three schools taught by teachers of the highest class? Why does the country pay some fourteen hundred pounds annually for these schools if they are not able to give a “thorough good education” to our Wesleyan Young ¥riends? There is no dowht but the action of the Wesleyans in this anatter will deal axbeavier blow to our “ noble system of education,” than even we ourselves ivagined. They find that they have trusted too much and too long to the State for the j-@dieatiqn of their.children, and they are now about taking the matter into their own hands. They are right, and we wish them every success, Gur correspondent seems to think that a “thorough good education,” based on religious principles, can be given without it being in any way sectarian or denominational. We beg to differ from him, unless he means by “religious principles” the principles oi natural réligion, which might have been in- culeated by Aristotle, ‘Plato, ticero or Virgil, or by any.other Pagan, as well as by any Christian. But our correspondent will, no doubt, base his *‘ religious principles” on the Bible. Very good Now, the Catholic parent is aware that there are .ketweep ,bis reconcilable differences, and that it is impos. sible .to open the New Testament, at almost any page, without forthwith encountesing the prime difficulty.
