By Darrell Cole, Sports Editor The UPEI Lady Pan- thers Basketball Team had a very successful weekend as PANTHERS’ BASKETBALL TEAM CAPTURE CHAMPIONSHIP they “eaptured the inaugu- ral Rodd-UPEI New Year’s Classic women’s basketball tournament. The tourna- ment was staged at the Alumni Gym. In the champi- onship game UPEI avenged its only loss this season with a 71-54 bombing of the Dal- housie Tigers. The Tigers handed the Panthers their only loss of the season in a November tournament. The Lady Panthers jumped out to quick start and a ten-point lead. However, the Tigers fought back to pull within one point at halftime trailing 30-29. The Tigers took the lead momentarily early in the second-half but the Lady Panthers rallied and pulled away from the tired Tigers leading by as many as eigh- teen points in the second- half. The Lady Panthers were lead by Tournament MVP Janet Nichols who domi- nated rebounding at both ends of the court. In Sun- day’s game Susan Knickle lead all scorers with 15 points, Janet Nichols had 14 points, Tracey Mac Eachern and Stephanie Smith each had 9 points, Ria Bahadurs- ingh had 8 points, Stephanie Knickle had 7 points, Na- dine Enman had 4 points, Toby Jones had 3 points, . and Tracey Bowie had two points. Tracey MacEach- ern scored 20 points on Sat- urday as the Lady Panthers got a berth in Sunday’s final with a 84-62 victory over the Brock Lady Badgers. Dal- housie came from behind to defeat UNB 74-71 and gain the final berth in Sunday’ championship game. 2 Panthers beat Laurier to claim runner-up position By Darrell Cole, Sports Editor The UPEI Panthers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back as they thumped the visiting Sir Wil- fred Laurier Golden Hawks 9-3 last Sunday afternoon at Cahill Stadium, in Summer- side. The victory gave the. Panthers the runner-up tro- phy in the College Hockey Challenge played last week- end in Summerside. All the proceeds from the tour- nament which was well at- tended went to the Centen- nial Cup ’89 Host Commit- tee. Randy Muttart scored three goals in the victory over Laurier. Other goal- scorers on Sunday included Dave Shellington, Richard Little, Mike Thususka, and Kevin Skilliter. On Friday night the Pan- thers were upset by under- dog St. Mary’s Huskies. The Huskies used a combi- nation of strong goaltending and stingy defense to hold off the explosive UPEI at- tack. After a scoreless first period the Huskies beat goal- . Rich Little netted the Panthers only goal mid- way through the second pe- riod. St.Mary’s went on to win the tournament Satur- day night as they came from behind for a 4—3 victory over Laurier. The Panthers were with- out the services of Captain Steve Fulton, Bob Giffin, Wayne Mac Phee, Jeff Stef- fen, and Ron Hennessey who were sitting out suspensions handed to them for their part in a December brawl with Moncton. Also absent was Donnie Clow who was out of province last weekend, and Greg Choules who is not re- turning to the Panthers. The next action for the Panthers is this weekend when the Panthers will be travelling to Sydney to play the University College of Cape Breton on Saturday and to Antigonish to play the St. F.X. X-Men on Sunday.
