I visited also our Thelus position
The timber has been removed from
most of the deep dugouts on the
ridge and the dugouts then blown
in. Ours st Thel_us have all practi-

cally suffered this fate. Thelus like
all the villages which have been
razed to the ground has a, few
_scattered frame houses, or elep-
hant-baek army huts and an esta-
minet or two. Vimy village is like
Thelus, Farbus is the same. Lens
is razed to the ground but a lot of
frame houses are qpringiing up.
The mines are expected to start.
producing again, barring accidents
in three. to five years.
Arras is in betteriehape than
Arlnentleres several hotels are
running and by next summer I ex-
pect they’l1 be coining money hand
over fist all over the devastated
region. The best hotels are of
course at Lille, a ciiy of 200,000
and the capital town of this part
of France.. _
It is really astonishing to ses the
splendid courage of these people
who are rebuilding theinhomes
and factories and filling in the
shell-holes of No Msn's Land to try '
to make once more prosperous the
Department Qu Nord.
