Belle River - Prairies Show C o m e b a c k (sliflclal to the Gill-Hull!) WINNIPEG, Sept. ID-{ggkgt- chewan has staged a 90 per cent comeback in one short year. Last year one-fourth of the people of the province required government assistance in the way of food and fuel, clothing, feed and fodder. The year the number is less than four percent, and their relief require- ments are comparatively light. Last year the government had to find 818,000,000 for relief. This year $1,000,000 will be ample. 'l‘his spring 8,000,000 acres were seeded with wheat supplied by the government. Next spring require- ments will not exceed 100,000 bush- els. Relief Needs Drop IIWEB BRANDS REGISTERED BY FERTILIZER MAKERS ______ ‘The Fertilizer Division of the Dominion Seed Branch reports that fewer brands of fertilizer are being registered mu ran than zoi-l several years past. This may be attributed to the general slump in trade, but not al-| together. 1n recent years fertilizer authorities in the different pro- vinces have been co-operating with the manufacturers with a view w reducing the number of formulae; in ‘fertilizers offered the farmers.‘ It is agreed that a range o1 for- _ mulae comprising not more than- six or eight different mixturm is about all that is needed for gener- al crop requirements in most of th! They require a little assistance- nat very much. The other 1,000, J lfamilies are in the southwestern Saskatchewan area, mostly in a dis- ltrict which has had no crops snce ‘i928. But, as showing the resourcefl fulness of these prairie farmers, they will require much less in re- lief this year than in the past two years. In other words, their position is becoming better rather than worse in spite of the fact that mis- fortune has been piled on misfort- une. . Ninety per cent, of the farmers of the province will be able this year to pay current year's taxes, repay the government for seed, binder twine and binder repairs, pay all expense of the year's work. and have enough money left to live until next harvest and do next sprlng’5 seeding without assistance. Poole & Co, province l -and test the milk facturera are required to manufac- ture fewer formulae, but increased volume of each of the formulae retained, their cost of production will decrease and farmers will be able to buy fertilizers at lower pri- ,ces. 1t is, therefore, to the great advantage of the farmers to have‘ the number of fertilizer brands of formulae reduced to a minimum. It. is suggested that farmers Wht contemplate buying fertilizers should communicate with the De- partment of Agriculture for the ‘ province in which they reside, and receive a list of the neoommended iformuiae for the various soil and crop conditions. Such action on the part of the farmers themselves should aid in arriving at the most Iefficieng and most economical for- imulae and in eliminating super- fluous brands. FARMERS SHOULD AVOH’) UN- PROFITABLE PRACTICES While many unprofitable prac- ticm are followed on farms throughout _, the country there would appear to be three that are outstanding that should long ago have been corrected, observes J. B. Spencer, Director of Publicity, Dc- partment of Agriculture, Ottawa. ‘These practices are the thick sow- iing of corn for a fodder crop: the rotting down of farmyard manure; and the carrying on of dairy farming with cows the production of which is not determined by mo- dern methods. It is many years since it became generally understood that the thick planting of corn not only wasted seed but resulted in a crop of low feeding value. It has long been demonstrated and the infor- mation made public that farmyard manure loses value about, at the same rate as it loses weight. still these two practices are permitted to cause heavy losses amongst par- ticularly ‘the class of farmers who can ill afford the waste that isin- curred. Ill advised as these practices are there is perhaps more excuse for them than that of feeding, hous- .ing and milking cows that give so little as not to pay their own way in the herd. Testing of cows for production by simple and sure me- thods has been long carried on in this country, and thousands of herds have been built up to a pro- fitable rate of production. Owners of hundreds of thousands of cows and thousonds of herds have not taken advantage of this service. and are each year helping to de- pres the farming industry. Ac- of the Federal Minister of Agri- culture thirty thousand cows, re- presenting three thousand three hundred herds, were tested within the past fiscal year under the Live Stock Branch cow testing policy.‘ which operates in.all the provin- ces except Britlsh Columbia, Sask- atchewan and Ontario.
