Discrepsncies which took place between counties in Nova Scotia as regards popula- tion did not seem te justify the cutting up of county lines for representation purposee, and why was not scme system followed in P. E Island. It was with the: idea that himself and his friend Yeo would be legis- lated out of the House. McDonald, of King's Co., P. E. Island, said it was not the first time that gerry mander wss introduced in the Maritime Provinces by Davies and his political friends, who did so to keep themselves in power in Provincial matters. He (MeDon- ald) concluded that redistribution in that province was es fair as it was possible to make it under the circumstances. To make fair redistribution it was impossible to ad- here to county lines. The local Govern- ment in their redistrébution bill did not stick st breaking county lines, but they evea crossed towaship lines to secure political advantage. He would not desig- nae @ party by the name of a Govern- ment who held power by a majority of one. He held up a map to sbow how the Pro vincial Government had gerrymandered the Province. There was not a township broken up in the bi!l now before the House of Com- mons. The bili sil through was a fair and just one. He would never consent to the vreaking up of town:hip lines. He was nt oppozed to the breeking up of coun'y line: McLean showed that by dividing the city of Charlottetown Davies could have been easily gerrymandered out of his seat. That was not dove. There was no orher et dividing the Island, if 1 sutation by population was adhered to, than the way it was proposed toit. The biil was a fair one as far as the Island was concerned. After some remarks from Perry against the bill, the House divided on amendment, which was lost by 59 10 95. The House then div ided on the motion that th» bill be read a second time, which was carried by 97 to 60. way pres —_—- The Presbyterian Assembly. MontTreaL, June 1.
