POTATO EXPORTING-With the Leuactment of the democratic tariil re- ducing the duty on potatoes is a mat- ter of perhaps a. few weeks only, plans are being completed for the resump- tion of a traffic between Prince Ed- ward Ieland and the United States that has been dormant of late years. The schooner Glyndon, now at New York says a Halifax Exchange; load- ing anthrncite for the Dartmouth Coal and Supply company, will be the first vessel to carry 5, cargo in this revived trade, her destination being probably Bridgeport. Formerly a large fleet of schooners plied between Prince Edward Island and New Eng- land hringlng potatoes South, chiefly to Portsmouth and Boston, but the trade was abolished by increased dut- ies. So that the ielanders will have a special interest in the outcome of the tariff bill, the psssin of which seems :in absolute certain y ISLANDERS IN IT.-A very enjoy- able picnic was held by a number of young people at the picturesque spot of Bushville, _I last Saturday after- noon, when Mrs. Charles Stothart chaperoned the party. They went down to Bushville on the 3 o’clock trip of the steamer and returned to town at 8 o'clock that night when, to add to the day’s enjoyment, Miss Nun Creaglian invited the party to her home for an informal dance. Among those present were Miss Alli- son Peters, Charlottetown, P. E. I.; Miss Dorothy Wilson, Millerton; Miss Lily Williamson, Miss Vera Corru- thcrs, Bummerside, P. E. I.; Misses Robinson, Miss Gretta Bundle, Misses Armstrong, Miss Laura. Williston, Miss Hazel Crabbe, Miss Nan Cren- ghan, Miss Jean Morrison, Miss Ger- tie Buckley and Messrs. _George Mc- Inerney, Charles Stothart, Winiiield Williamson, Cleo. Demers and others. BUTTER, CHEESE AND EGGS.- The' butter market has been very much stronger during the "past week, says the Halifax Martime Merchant. The causes are several. The flrst one is that Creamery butter has for some months been selling below its real value, prices have been kept down by the big stocks ot certain centres by the slow demand from the west, and also by the stringency of the money market. The improvement in prices is due to the considerably better demand from the west, and because certain experts were made to thc old country which lowered stocks in Que- bec and Ontario:-also to the fact that some inquiry for butter is com- ing in from the United States., The actual advance in prices is about 2 cents per pound, Sales made at the Cowansville, Quebec, Board, the Pre- mier board of Canada, show advances equal to this figure. Dealers are very glad to see a higher market, as even at present price they will find it dilfl- cult to make fi profit on what stocks are being held in cold- storage. -The cheese market is active and prices have advanced a half cent a pound. Large cheese sold at Charlottetown last week at 13) cents for the last half of August with twins S of a ilbWWMWWWWl_ "BEAVER”FLOUR is m a Bread Flour and a Pastry Flour The perfedt flour ls tho one that combines tho goodqualltledof Ontario and Western wheat. ,This lo oxsdiy what ,“Bea'vor" HQ' dool. it ls a blond of beet Ontario fall what with n little Western what to odd strength. Dealers are now fear- ing a repetition of last year's experi- ence with values, when the market was rushed up to such 5 very high point in the autumn that a great deal of money was lost by those who dc- cided to go in to the market for theft winter supplies. It is felt that it would be the best interests of the trade if fall purchases were made, on no higher values than at present._»The supply of good eggs from- nearl»y points is very light, and prices’ -"have advanced about oneeent per dozen in the past fortnight. Arthur Barner, Rev. Willis Burton Leard, pastor of the Method- ist church, Bowden, Alta., to Annie Belle, youngest daughter of Mr. John Patton, Naticle, Mass. Both Mr. and Mrs. Leard were former residents of Alberton, P.E.I. BACK FROM OLD COUNTRY.- Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Christie, of To- ronto, fnrmerly of Fredericton, who have many friends in Charlottetown, returned this week from an extended trip to the Old Country, having spent the summer since June in touring the British Isles and the Continent. They are in Fredericton at present to take charge of the Cowan Company’s ex- hiblt at the Fair. FUNERAL YEB'1‘ERDAY.- The funeral of the late Mrs. Peter Craig, took place yesterday afternoon from ber late residence, to the Peoples Cemetery and was very largely at- tended. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Marshall. The following were the pall-bearers: Messrs John Ca-meron, A. MeEachern, C. Hughes, J. Math- eson, H. Vanlderstine and J. Egan. RECORD CATCI-IES.-A large body of mackerel is in eastern wat- ers at present, and it appears as if thc natural increase has overtaken, in a measure, the destruction caused by the American seine which has been used less and less the last few years, ns no fish could be found to seine. On the l`2th inst. good catches were made from South Lake to Red l’oint, in fact the best for thirty years. Re- cord catches were made at Basin H'ead,‘whcre Mr. William Coffin and Mr. Seth McLean had the distinction of hooking and landing ,over a thous- and mackerel each, while Messrs John Robertson, Arthur Neal and the Lo. Purres landed large quantities. A GIANT LOBSTER-A Bshcrmnn at North Rustico last week made a great find-a monster lobster, which had evidently been wasbedashore by the gale which had raged off that por- tion of the const. It was alive when he found it-in fact, it was rail alive when he brought it to Charlottetown on Saturday, andiwhen it was seen by a Guardian representative yester- day at the office of Mr, J. J_ Hornby, lobster exporter, Water Street. It weighed between 14 and 15 lbs., and from the tip of its tail to the end of its outstretched claw it measured 31 inches. Evidently it was of consider- nble age; sen moss was thick upon it while there was a lmrnacle of consid- able growth on one claw. That harn- acle was inhahi'ted‘by some member ol the phylae family! Of course such a unique lobster is riot destined for the ordinary fate of such fish. Mr. llorn- by intends to have it prepared ly a taxidermist and mounted on n board to add to the decoration of the wall of his office, which is even now adorn- ed by another giant specimen of lob- ster, still larger tlinn thc recentcnp- ture, as it weighs' 17 lbs. and mea sures 34 inches.
