According to the figures given by the accegsors this year’s valuation is $2,035,000, against $1,- 850,000 in 1889. The railway, church, and city property, together with exempted factories, swell the total valuation to about $4,000,000. —_——__e_-—— ANoTHER Fixe.—The Journal says: On Tuesday night, 20th inst., about 11 or 12 o'clock, a house and barn belonging to Mr. Reuben Gallant, Carleton, Lot 6, was burned jo ashes. The building had been unoccupied since June last. The origin of the fire is un- known, but is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. Mr. Gallant estimates his loss at $400. Nortq Apams, Mass., May 28. Mag Shea, a notoriously dissdlute woman who had been keeping house for Nick Bradley, a negro, near Stanford Vil- lage, V.°T., was persuaded by John Dil- worth, living about two miles from Stamford to leave Bradley and keep house for him. She came on Sunday, and that night Bradley and some friends came to the house frightened Dilworth out and remained there until Tuesday, drinking cider, holding caroasal and breaking dishes and furniture. On Tuesday morning, the woman died. By evidence adduced at the inquest to-day, Bradley tried to persuade her to return to his house, and she refused. Whereupon he stabbed her to the heart. Bradley and three other men found in the house were arrested and held for the grand jury eg News From Halifax. QuEBEC May 28. At yesterday's meeting of the Cabinet Mr. Beigque } C., of Montreal, a strong local government party man, was appointed a Royal Commissioner to investigate the Whelan-Picaud scandal. Beique is armed with power to send for persons and papers and to examine witnesses under oath. Hon. F. Langilier is retained to re- present the Government in this enquiry, which, it is said will be commenced im- mediately. The Application Considered. Orrawa, May 28.
