Until re- cently the house was in the occupa- tion ot a retired prison warder named Alfred Westbeare. who lived alone. When the discovery was made neighbors recalled the fact that a few 10811 880 a son of Wostbesre, who had been staying with his father. suddenly disappeared, and it was lu- mrred that the skeleton was that of e missing man. John William Rowlands, the land- lord where the skeleton was found, told the court that when Westbeare was seriously lil he did his best to I0! the address of the nian's wife. but he declared: “lt is no uae. She is too old. She is seventy-two years old. and no use to me. My son and daughter I do not think will care about coming. and they cannot afford to dc it." Referring to being separ- ated from his wife, Westbeare said: "We cnuld not get on, and decided to separate mutually and peaceabiy." Josiah Brown, builder, said be had done some repairs to the house occu- Dlcd by \Vcs'.beare, and, when com- ploting the inside of the house, he asked Rowlands if he could see what was the matter with the back yard. Elizbteen inches below the surface he came across several human bones. They were covered with a layer of broken bricks. He gave information to the police. Next morning he re- moved other remains. Maud Mary Westbeare said that her brother, Alfred Charles had some years ago come to visit his father but disappeared. Her mother later wrote to her father about the missing son, and the father replied something to the effect: "You need have no fear; your son ls at rest.” On her father’s death Miss West- bears and her brother Frederick went to Poole for the funeral. They found ln the house two suits of working clothes, and a best suit belonging to her missing brother. Dr. Oliver, police surgeon, Poole. said the skeleton found in the yard was that of an adult male. There were no signs of any fracture of the skull or injury to the bones, upon which there was little flesh. The body was hurled 2 feet 6 inches deep. and was lying full length face upwardi. with the arms straight by the sides. Under the shoulder~biades some frag- ments ol’ clothing were found. The body must have been buried some yeurs. Levi Luckham, who stated he had lived next door to thc house for fifteen years, said Westbeare was a queer man and very seldom spoke. Seine years ago Luckham noticed that the old man was frequently pulling up the tiles outside the buck door and re- laying them. At one time the old man had all the tiles up und piled against the cool-hole; for a long time witness thought he did it for amuse ment. Westbeare also used to spreen oil' that part of the place with a cur- tain, and had sat in the yard in a chair, sometimes all night, as though keeping guurd. Westbeure used to walk about in his rooms the whole night. Luckham did not believe lic undressed fo years; he always had his boots on. _ . g. the foreman stating that there was -no evidence of identity noi' uf the cause if death. Abdul Hamid, ex-Sultan of Turkey, came into possession of $26,000, given ‘ him by a German admirer for the pur- pose of erecting a temple of peace in Constantinople. Of all men in the world, Abdul would probably be the last to lay the cornerstone for such an edifice. Some two years ago at Leipslc a curious old man by the name of Zoni- lner died. leaving his fortune, $26,000, to the ex-Sultan with `rthe above stip- ulation.
