The amusing hypocrisy of the criticisms of the Leader of the Opposition was glaringly exposed by Sir Charles Dalton in the House Wednesday afternoon. Re- plying to the allegations of Mr. Bell that the people did not want the Sanatorium, that it was not the kind of ranatorium they wanted, and that they resented being charged with any part of the upkeep, Sir Charles made this deiinite proposition: ` “If Mr. Bell \vill introduce a resolution to relieve the province of all future responsibility in connection \vith the Sanatorium, I would take it back. I would do more than that. I would refund to the Qi>\iei'iiiiieiit- although I have no doubt he would say I was forfeiting' my seat thereby-I would pay back to the Goveriimeiit all expenses to which they may have been put in regard io that institution, and take the, whole thing back. Now, will the lleitdcr ot' the Opposition iiitrodtice a i'esolution to that ell`ect`.' lf he does, and it is carried, will he be satislieil?" e ' ' 'l`his was a direct cl'iallen_e‘e and if Mr. Bell \vere :~incere he could have given but one answer. llut he was rot sincere, and being on the horns of a dilemma '.\'i'ig_»'gl`ecl out of a most iiiiiligiiiiiietl situation by promis- ing to ans\-ver Sir Charles “at another time during' the session." r 'l`.lll‘l l"().\ l!l`.‘4l.\'l'lNN. ____ ”~ l " 'l`wo tliousand two hundred dollars lor a pair of lox i\eltis;`one thousand seven hundred and fifty for another; pair and one thousand six hundred a_nd iifty for still an-. other pair; these are some of the prices received within the' past few days by Mr. Chester McClure in New York and St. Louis for some of the pelts taken by him from Island fox ranches a few weeks ago. These prices will, we believe, be satisi`actoi'_v to the owners. The_v will be a revelation to other 'fox breeders and they will also be illuininative both to the fortunate men who owned them and to the iiian_v others who own foxes of whose value they are probably i_e,'norant. It will at once occur to the man who has fox pelts to dispose_of that there are two and only two requisites to the obtain- ing of good prices for them. l"ii'st, the pclt must be of l good qualitv; second. there must be a salesman who, knows pelts and their values and whowill stick to his _iob till he gets what the condition of the market entitles him to. Evidently the pelts for which the above prices were obtained were of good quality; evrdeiitly, also, l\/Ir. l\’lcClure possesses tlie'neccessar_\' qualities of a sales- izian; he knows the value of iurs; lie knows the condi- tion of the market; he knows when to and when not to (iuit. He visited New York, then Louis, then returned to New York. He refused to accept lirst offers: he P01" sisted and fiiially received his price. With fox pelts from eiglit huiidred to a thousand dol- lars each there should be good money in i'aisingi'oxcs, that is, 'foxes-that will bring these prices or even much less. lint what has been found true of cows, horses, hogs, sheep and, in fact, of evei°ythiii,<;' else we raise on the i’ariiis. is also true of foxes; it will pay only to keep the ritflit kind ol' stock; scrubs, i_ii any stock, are an iiiiprolit- table and an expensive asset. 'l`liere are no doubt, inaii.\' foxes in this province whose pelts will not bring such prices as those above mentioned; there are probably some which will not pay for their keep._'l`he sooner these latter, if any, are disposed of the better it will be for their owners, and the sooner the real value of all our foxes is i`ouiid out the better_\vill it be also for all concerned. _ The pelt season is now over for this year and no lur- ther discoveries will be made as to the quality ot our foxes. 'I`hose who have profited by Mr. lVlcClure_’s mission l.o the United States inarkets--whether in discoverin;,>' that their foxes were worth much _or worth nothing - will be in a better position tlran i-ver lo shape their course l`or the lu- ture ,will be able to retain the stock that has proveil pro- fitable and dispose ot' those that will not pay for their keep. And we have no doubt that both these prudent courses will be followed. , The other lesson to be derived from l\/Ir. McClure s .niission to the United States is easily learned, namely that the only businesslike way of selling fox pelts is co- operatively, through the hands of a qualified salesman like Mr. McClure. The prices he received, $1,200 for one pclt and $1,000 for the other, making'_ $2,200 for` the pair, is the highest price paid in the United States mar- ket duririg the year. This credential to t-he superi- ority of Prince Edward Island foxes will mean much to the industry. It will mean especially the advisability of procuring the right kind of stock. We must not forget that these are war time prices and that the price re- ceived for that famous Dalton pclt that made the world record, namely, live hundred and forty pounds, or appro- ximately $2,70(), is still a possibility. There is much of promise in the future of the fox business provided we made use of the lessons we have learned in it. The main lessons to be rememberd are that quality is everything. both in the fox and in the manner of disposing of its pelt. Our Island foxmen are fortunate in having found a salesman who can fulfil the latter con- dition ;_it is up to themselves to fulfil the first. ,\'O'l‘l‘T..‘! _ The winter closed, officially, yesterday, March 22nd, after being in business, ofiicially also, since December 22nd. There will likely be some time lost in cleaning out the remnants and as a result the shop will still remain open for some time attending to any little storms that may have forg'otten‘ to make an earlier call. It is satisfactory to know, however, that it is practically over andvthat spring is already taking up her abode ~with us. i illllllli llN THE ADDRESS' | ____ _ ttfontlnued livin Page 'i‘wo.) ber ai' choice furs will bo uttered.
