Reach Out Growing Up is Tough ' Growing up is tough I for everybody. But, growing up for sure children is a lot tougher, because they only have one parent in the home. And the one parent they do have often has to spread their time and counsel and even their love in a way that leaves a young child feeling isolated, lost, empty. The child needs direction, someone to look up to, someone that won't’ but will be a '\ 1. Where and when did Big Brothers orginate? In Canada, Big Brothers began in 1913. In P.E.I. the association was formed in 1975. ‘Big ' Sisters became a part of this association in 1981. 2. What is the fee for the service? . The parent pays no money to have a Big Brother or Big Sister for his.her child and neither does the volunteer receive any money to be a Big Brother or Sister. 3. How are volunteer Big Brothers/Big Sister trained? These volunteers are well selected, but there is no training period. Each applicant is in turn interviewed and informed of the responsibilites and expectations of a Big Brother/Big Sister. During this time the case worker becomes aware of the volunteers strengths and interests, which will allow him/her to be matched with the appropriate Little ‘ Brother/ Sister . ' I 4. What are the respon— sibilities of a Big ' Brother/Sister? ’ A big Brother or a Big Sister is expected to see his/her little brother/sister regularly once a week for an average of three to four hours. This appeals to ‘ busy students whose free time may vary depending on papers due and exam scheduling. To help the Little Brother/Sister it is essential that a volunteer act naturally. His/her image and‘ example are the basis of his help. It is what ‘ he does that counts. When a problem is encountered, the volunteer should contact his/her case worker immediately for advice. 6. How do Big Brother/ Sisters and Little Brothers/Sisters spend their time together? Basically, they share their interests and activities together. Interests of the Big and Little Brother/Sister are considered before they are introduced. 7. How are big and little Brothers/Sister teamed UP? This is arranged by the case worker who interviews the Big and 1 Little Brother/Sister. After careful study the two are matched on the basis of background, . . interests, personality types, the strenghts of the volunteer and the needs Of the boy/girl. 8.‘ What would I get out of Big.
