TAXES on utilities are increasingomlnousiy, l and expenses for labor and materials are shooting upward. In the face of these increased expenses, the utilities are forced to reduce their incomes by making “mergency” rate reductions. These factors are beyond the control of public utility managements. They are the principal factors which make ii increasingly difficult for many utility companies to earn enough to meet their fixed interest requirements. In the case of the Associated System, it is estimated these uncontrollable expenses and reductions in income during the present year will amount to more than $5,000,000: increases in . More for Taxes . N. R. A. Costs . Reductions in Rates .\ LESS for INTEREST $1,500,000 More Taxes Two new taxes imposed this year, the 3% tax on electricity and the capital stock tax, add ap- proximately $1,500,000 to the tax burden of the Associated System. Associated taxes in 1932 were $8,300,000, an increase of 33% over 1930. Price and Wage Increases Add $2,000,000 Direct costs for wages and salaries under the N. R. A. are estimated at $1,000,000, and indirect costs in higher prices for materials, supplies, and equipment at another $1,000,000. The Assoc- iated System is glad lo cooperate in the Admin- istraiion’s effort to stimulate business recovery, but severe rate reductions and destructive taxation make it increasingly difficult to do so. Increased Taxes, Expenses, Reduced Rates Endanger Public Utility investments in New York Aloné anies in New York State alone have had their rates reduced by $1,125,000 this year. Reduced rates mean reduced income. Demand for emergency rate reductions is widespread. Deficit-Interest Not Earned Largely as a result of these conditions, the Associated Gas and Electric Company showed a deficit after interest charges of nearly $650,000 for the second quarter of 1933. In spite of increasing electric output, no month in 1933 has. produced total revenues higher than those of the same month in 1932, previo in the entire history of industry. The most recent discouraging. usly the worst year the public utility figures are equally Maturities Being Refunded from Earnings Restrictions on security markets caused by the National Securities Act m ake it necessary to refund maturities out of current earnings. This results in less earnings available to pay interest charges. 30,000 Investors Protect Themselves by Depositing Under Plan More than 30,000 holders of Associated Gas and Electric Company Fixed Interest Debentures have realized the danger of this situation, and have deposited their securiti es under the Plan of Rearrangement of Debt Capitalization.
