Student The following interesting letter has been received from Mr. Wil- fred J. Driscoll, St. Dunstan's University student attending the International Summer Seminar at Breda, The Netherlands. The let- ter is dated July 31. “The Seminar, which is being held in the beautiful surround- ings of an old Mediaeval Castle. near Breda, in Southern Holland. is now well underway. Along with our 50 Canadian students are re- presentatives from every Europ- ean country west of the'iron curtain-an interesting collection of students indeed. "There are 25 from Germany. some admittedly former Nazis. other: who were taken from school and forced to fight during the last stages of the war; others spent considerable time on the Eastern front and have had varied experiences as prisoners-of-war. “There are representatives from Holland who played leading roles in the underground movement. There are some among the Can- adians and British who helped bomb the cities and the homes oi‘ the very German students who are present. Add this all together and you have our seminar, meet- ing with complete frankness and academic freedom. "All have come to participate in the exchange and discussion of ideas. It is an effort to make at lcast a small contribution to the solution of some of the contenti- ous problems which perplex the world. . “The general topic under dis- cussion has been broken down in- to “Liberty and Order"-how to achieve a balance between the two. We have a staff of seven Canadian professors and occasion- al outside lectures by men re- nowned in their field. "The whole student body is given two lectures in the morning which serve as a basis for discus- sion in smaller seminar groups in the afternoon. Every possible sub- ject comes under consideration, and argument continues long into the night. "Our week-ends are spent on conducted tours to the beautiful countryside and cities of Holland, a country old and yet new. One sees the quaint cobblestone streets. the majestic cathedrals with their Gothic architecture, the rich col- lections of art by such masters as Von Gogh, Rubens, Rembrandt and others. “The rapidity with which the Dutch rebuilt their industry and economy after the liberation is evident on all sides. The port of Rotterdam, into which a large portion of their Marshall dollars have gone. is again a bee hive o! shipping activity. The whole econ- omy of Holland of course as well as that of other European coun- tries. is largely ‘ependent upon an economically ‘strong Germany-but then that raises other problems. "On the whole from the Canad- ian viewpoint, I feel that the pur- poses of this seminar are being satisfactorily achieved. Because of our success in North America with democratic forms of overnmeni. Europeans are lookin more and more to us. It is too bad ‘that we cannot ofler them more. for North Americans too are losing the spir- itual roots from which our whole way of life has developed. “There are such huge problems. especially, in Germany-millions of refugees. over population, un- employment. allied dismantling- problems which have not a! yet been solved by the Allies. "The German students here are working frantically for a demo- cratic Germany-but they readily admit that they are not represent- atives of the German people. As long as the Allies control her in- dustry and economic life. how- ever remotely. so long willy the well organized Communists and other dissatisfied persons have r0 ands ur oses.
