ELT lk ON epeme 7 rae ites ie eS mm ae <A eatin 08 : se a COMME a whine ee. Ot ars AAR 0 cama oa Farm Notes. Six hundred horses and ploughs nigs- tered, a few weeks ago, on the lands of Mr. O'Connell, late secretary of the local Land League at Powertown, two miles from) Clonmel. Col. Robert Holloway, and those assvci-j ated with him in the importation of Clydes dale horses, have been very unfertun: ate this season. Besides losing the noted stallions Druid, Lord Douglas, and Glendale, they have lost the stallions Bonnie Scotland, winner of second prize in his class at th Chicago fair, Black Watch, the Abbot, the Laird of Aboyne, and also Newstead. In additian to those we are intormed that two | of their prize-winning mares have died. These horses reached the United States jaded from their long trip, and the pre vailing horse disease affected them more seriously on this atcount. This case serves to show how much risk attends at | times the importation of live etock, and | that the business is not always profitable To the educated farmer the rocks-present their own history, written in unmistakable characters by the finger of God. The soil | whispers to him of its fertility or complains of its poverty in language perfectly intelli gible, and the treasures of Flora, Pomona and Ceres, are shown, in rich abundance at the feet of him who wields the magic wand | of intelligent labor. The following is the Manchester, Eng., system of disposing of town refuse. The ordinary refuse from the dust-bins is first | sorted out and dealt with according to its| nature. Two tanks are provided, in which fish, dogs, cats, bones, and slanghter- house re fuse are boiled down. The fat is | skimmed off the top, and then put into a} canvas squeezer, from which oil is obtained, which sells at £24 a ton, the remaining cake being mixed among the other manure. In one year 141 tons of fish and tripe refuse, thirteen tons of cats, and seven tons of | dogs have been dealt with in this way, all of which would otherwise have been thrown | to rot upon the ashpits in open spaces, or to pollute the river or canals, | j i According to the returns of the inspec- tors at ports where American and Canadian cattle are landed furnished to the Privy Council, there were last year alone 8,721 animals thrown overboard, and 498 were landed dead, while 472 arrived so rauch | injured and exhausted that they were killed at the place of landing. This makes a total of 9,221 animals which, in the space | ct twelve months, were either lost or seriously injured in the passage across the | Atlantic. The Canadian Thistle and the English Sparrow have proved such a nuisance to our neighbors across the border, that they | are quite in despair. The little pugnacious | sparrow has driven from their parks and | gardens their birds of melodious song and fine feather. It destroys their grains and lets the caterpillar live. The thistle marches on triumphantly, defying plough, hoe and scythe. ea oe ~_ — We are informed of a most interesting | discovery in the Highlands of Scotland. tn making some alterations in an old cot- tage on the estate of Gairloch, the seat of | Sir Kenneth Mackenzie, baronet, formerly | occupied by the poet Burns, there were | found between the ceiling and the thatch | some original MSS. in the handwriting of the illustrious bard, and which kave not been included in any Of his works. Pos- sibly most interesting may be the verse meant as a preface to ‘‘ Scots wha’ hae,” of which our informant has favored us with a copy: At Bannockburn proud Ldward lay, The Scots they were na’ far away, But waitin for the break o’ day To sho them wha’ wére best. The sun peeped 6'er you purple heath To usher in the dawn of death, As Bruce, wi’ soul-inspiring breath, His followers thus addressed — The good sense of the poet in omitting the above lines will be confessed. The measure of the fourth and eighth lines was after- wards altered in the rest of the poem. The occasion of Burns’ scjourn in the Highlands was a desire for literary seclusion under the patronage of the Duchess of Athole and | other noble persons. en Ey eee Special Notices.
