Dear Editor, As only a novice in the ways and dealings of University life, I, find it rather diffic- ult to get enthusias— ‘ tic over Student Union politics. The election of the four major pos— itions just doesn't stand paramount in my mind and I fully realise that it will make little difference to me who ul— tnnately occupies these positions. Next year I will be a sophomore and I will recieve all the benefits open to me as an average bloke on campus. In other words, I will still be permitted tc guzzle beer to my hearth con— tent and enjoy the vis- iting bands at my local campus pub periodically throughout the school year. But maybe this view lacks insight and I should be fairer to the diligent can 'didates. vyingrfior the ma- jor positions. because: Of I: 101198119: «’ ed to myself to the polls keeping the issues my ., s T Terry most of the audience all Right Jon- sie? gave us more than execellent show, 1:1 I197 $91}? level upper' four choices on my own free will. I guess pos- sibly I derived some form of satisfaction from exercising my dem— OCratic enterprise . But a vicious rumour from the day before caused a rumble in the pit of my stomach as I checked off my ballot. The day before was a Tuesday like any other Tuesday with the excep— tion that it was the day before the'Student Union election. Then I heard it. It had been the first time I had come across any— thing similar since my grade nine History class when I had read about Hit ler and Mussolini. What I am speaking of I lear— ned from three of my associates who spend a bit of time in the Duffy Building basement. Appar- ently they and others present had been instruct ed by their department's I upperclassrnen of the four desired candidates in the election. I don' really think my three friends were terribly Hupset or 13.11: out by the _ ”‘ also gave us classnen walkway. But some— how I just couldn't con— vince myself of the legitimacy of this oc— curence even as the topic of conversation moved on to the upcoming Thur— sday night Pub. But I guess I can rationalize it all and use the old cliche that it will all come out in the wash. Next year will come and go and many fine times will be spent at the Barn swilling brew and 'partying and nobody will ever know the difference. After all that is what politics is all about. —Disillusioned Freshman Acadian_Wee;k will be launched by the Univer— sity of Prince Edward Island on Monday March 14 supported by a grant from the Department of Wthe Secretary of State.
