By His Eminence During these last few days we have been concerned with the Wu-sge of a 16-year-old girl. and we have been able toirelolce in xglng a. whole nation take to its hm; this youngster who was the first to swim across Lake Ontario. The most heartening element in this shift of emphasis in the headlines is the fact that what we moo been applauding, what has won all our hearts, is a virtue, the virtue of fortitude which (a- long with prudence. Justice and wnperance) is one of the "car- dinal” virtues. These virtues Ire simply qualities of soul by which we habitually act with prudence. E. justly, act temperateiy or courageously. These particular four qualities are called "cardinal" be- uuu they are the basic qualities 0; it sound moral life. and the other virtues of the good men are rooted in these. A, we followed Marilyn Bell gcross Lake Ontario, almost stroke by stroke. what we were admir was a manifestation of one of these key virtues; and our anxious hopes for her success. and now the generous tributes we have paid her. are simply a proof of the high esteem we have for this bas- 1c Christian virtue. But we must remember that for- titude Is not primarily a physical mmg; it is more than the right combination of well-drilled mus- rles or brute strength. rortltude 13 a quell JON the soul. a. deter- mination in our will to overcome difficulties in the achievement of grind. 0 I 0 Marilyn's feet was but one ex- ample of this virtue, and it in no my lessens the honor we pay here, to point out that there are other manifestations of courage, perliaps in our own lives, which Arohbishopls Views on TV SASKATOON. (CP)-The Arch- bishop of Canterbury says that television is a most influential educational instrument but one which could make people "increas- ingly unable to be educated by anything at all." "it's dreadful to think of it.' he said. what would television do to a person? he asked. It might "edu- rate him into something." on the other hand, the viewer might sit mmpietely impaasive, "a kind of pudding letting it flow over him." When this happened the person would be "increasingly unable to be eriiicated by anything at all." FREETOWN UNITED W. M. B. The September meeting of this auxiliary was held at the church. Not many of us are given an opportunity to make such a dis- play of courage as is required in W across Lake Ontario. But there is not .one of us who is not forced to meet, in the liv- mg of our vocations, difficulties, temptations. crises. which de- mand a courage far greater in in. tensity. and more persistent in duration. than that required in any feat of physical endurance. There is little that is spectacu- lar, for example. in the dedica- tion to the vocation of marriage mid! by I young man and woman. Yet they undertake, by their ex- change of vows, a. lifetime of ob- ligations and suffering which re- quires an uncessing exercise of the virtue of fortitude. From even a purely human point of view. a vo- cation is a quest for happiness: but any real happiness is bought only at the price of sacrifice, and ing sacrifice demands courage. From God's point of view, our vocation is the way we serve Him. the way we show our love for Him; and in proving our love for Him. He demands fortitude, and will allow problems and suffering which alone can be a test of that love. And the happiness we find in our vocation, the real success in it, is the result of passing thou tests of suffering with courage. Last week thousands of teach- ers rsturned to the classrooms to face tens of thousands of stu- dents. The tesching vacation is far from spectacular; but when a teacher is truly dedicated to that life. it demands an exercise of fortitude that is heroic. The teacher rarely sees the flowering of the seeds of knowledge and Virtue that he plants. God" and hymn "Once To Every Man and Nation" was sung. This was followed by scripture reading and Driver.
