This Order was founded in 1831 by Gregory XVI to reward the civil and military virtues of papal subjects. Sir Charles Dalton is well- deserving of the honour for his munificence in pre- senting the Charles Dalton Sanatorium to his native Province, and also in endowing St. Dunstan's College. There is no one in the history of the Province who has equalled or approached his generosity in this res- pect. The Kiiighthood of St. Gregory is conferred upon very few, and then only for exceptional and out- standing virtues of a public character. At the mo- ment we recall but three other instances, viz: Sir Tho- mas Dimsdale in England, a distinguished surgeon and pioneer in the practise of inoculation for small-pox, Sir Lonier Gouin, Premier of Quebec, and -Sir J. D. .\lu_rpliy the great medical expert of Chicago. . Sir Charles Dalton is to be congratulated upon being deemed worthy to rank with such eminent public bene-. factors. ~ , -inc-_ - GRAIN COMPETITION ‘ Entries for the fields of-standing grain competition are now being received by the Department of Agricul- ture a'iid it is gratifying to note that the number so far received is very encouraging and promises well for a record' competition. , Prizes are given in this competition but farmers are not entering it for the sake of the cash prizes, which is necessarily much too small to repay them for the extra care and trouble involved., They are -work-'I ing for a much larger prize, the prize of efiiciency, the prize of reaping the largest possible harvest for'thé seeds, and _the efforts of our Department of Agricu 'ture and of our agricultural experts are continually di- rected towards inducing the farmers to exercise the ttupggugg, gm* gg,” g gggfsame care .in the selection of their seeds as they do ill the selection of their stock. For this reason the hand picking yeariafter- year of the best heads of grain in ) “ "_ ‘_ ,the field is advised and this is being followed by our ».........»-wil experimental farms and our best farmers. They are now-applying to _their field crops the. policy that proved so successful with their animals and 'it,.is proving equally successful. The theory that “blood tells" is as true of field crops as of animals. 5-'The best seeds produce the best' crops, while thelalboiur. on poor seeds is practically lost. \Ve trust that this year the great majority of our farmers will enter the fields of standing grain com- petition. It' .they win a prize it will show them they are on the right road; if they fail they will be in a po- sition to know why and to make arrangements to have better results next year. Those who wish to be “in the swim” in our ad_vanced.and rapidly advancing agri- culture should at once sendtheir _entry to the Depart- ment of Agriculture, at Charlottetown, from which every possible assistance will be given them. )>¢( PATRIGT SPASM N0. 5. The spasm iif yesterday’s Patriot in defence of the illfated amé`ndtnent'proposed by Mr. Bell at the recent special session of the Legislature is apparently a re- lapse. From beginning to end the spasms have been a series of ievasions and winds up in the Patriot's characteristic fashion with a suppression of facts. Mr. Bell’s amendment proposed that “the Government *f this province be authorized to take from ordinary re- venue and expend for war andipatriotic purposes dur- ing the current year the sum of $2o,ooo, such war pur- poses to include a gratuity of ten dollarsfor every sol- dier reccntly gonc to the front or who may hereafter go during the war." The Patriot for reasons best known to itself sup- presses the amount, leaving it blank; it also for similar reasons withholds 'thefact that the proposed gratuity a“"0““t S°W“» the P\'il¢-‘-'ff S¢¢“\'i“g`f0l' "l\¢mS°l‘/95. fe-[to the soldiers would amount to over $30,000, which liable, hand-picked, pedigreed seed, not for the sake of selling it at an advanced price but for the sake of re- ceiving from it a larger yield of bushels with which to feerl their stock, for few of our best farmers to-day sell graiiieven fora seed. Better grain, cleaner grain ami more of it is the idea prompting the movement both on the part of thc Department and on that of the farmers who enter it. - ~ All farmers who know anything about their busi- ness, know the value of properly bred live stock. The scrub breeders are no longer in use among our far- myrs. Horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, foxes, are bred fromi the best available stock and the extra expense in se- curing sixch is not regarded as additional expense but 'even the Patriot’s squirming would find it diliicult to extract from _the $2o,ooo. The' P_ati`7iot7_also suppresses the fact that the amendment specified that the debentures should be re- payable' within aiterm not exceeding forty years-a specification which would effectually relieve the pre- sent genera'ti'on'~frif' any sacrifice, throwing the burden upon the shoulders' of the younger soldiers on their return 'froiiiiithe iwar and upon their posterity. We have shown that the premises on which the amend- ding resolution was founded were false and mislead- ing and it naturally follows that the conclusion is with- out foundation in fact. The Patriot realizes this, as`fa profitable investment.
