We understand that a lirge building ie being erected this year in order to accommodate the increased number of pupils and when completed there will be accom:no- dation for about sixty. Pupils from the Is- and in destitute circumstances are admitted free. Mr. Powers hopes that the citizens will contribute liberally to help along the good work. Tue Oar Crop.—The indications are the maritime province oatcrop will be liht this year. In Quebec, which has not been sesiously effected by the drought, the crop is reported good. J.J. Bostwick, who quite recently M4 id a visit to portions of that prov- tiat ince, reports the crops generally good this year. Oats in the west appear to be very plentiful. In Chicago on Monday they were quoted at 193 to 19}c. as against 24hc. same day last year. _——_ »-—— Nonsensk.—The Rev. Hugh O. Pente cost is exceedingly liberal in theory, at least, with the burglar than burglareth. In a sermon at Newark, on Sunday, Sept. 1, he said : ** If I knew asburglar was in my house at night, I would go to him as | would to a friend whom | desired to help. If he then desired to take my goods | would make no protest, nor would I cause his arrest. I would follow him to the door and invite him to call again.” The rev- erend gentlemen has perhaps a right to pursue this course in his own house, though we ventnre the opinion that he would make no such declaration unless he felt sure that his house offers no attractions to burglars. He has ro right, howver, to preach such demoralizing ‘‘rot” to the public, including possible burglars. ivrdnticiaia Sunpay Services,—Methodist Church, at ll a. m., Rev. " Relieving the Suffer ers. i (JUEBEC, i | Sept 20. About half-past seven o'clock last evea- excitement by a report that a great cliff "| Slide had oceurred on Champlain Street. Thousands of people tlocked to the scene to tind that the report was authentic.{ Several thousand tons of solid rock had crushed down with territic force from almost under the King’s Bastian on the Citadel and a little distance west of the end of Dufferin Terrace, and completely demolished several stone and brick dwelling houses on Cham- nvlain Street, some three hundred feet be- low. “* B Battery, the police force and fire bri- gade corps were early on the scene and rendered valuable assistance. The night was intensely dark and a strong gale was blowing, yet notwithstanding these difficul- ties everyone worked hero cally. Up to midnight 13 bodies and 16 wound- ed h id be« nt vke n out, -and it is believed that 175 bodies still remain buried. The bodies are so mangled as to affect the strongest men. Some of the wounded had broken arms and legs, others were badly crushed and mutilated in ali shapes, Under some of the houses crushed cries for help could be heard, but no immediate aid could be given. Although soldiers and citizens worked like trojans little progress was made in recovering the bodies, owing to the stu- pendous mass of rocks and debris en- cumbering the ruins. More rocks were continually tumbling down, and the people of the locality were fieeing with dread, lest the whole boulder forming the highest point of Quebec would give way. Accidents were occurring every moment to the rescuers. The crashing of timbers and falling of huge rocks put the lives and limbs of the volunteers in con- tinual danger. The mass of rocks detached from the clifi’s side left a vacant space of extra- ordinary dimensions. It has worked im- mediateiy under Dufferin terrace, under- mining the support of the great promenade, so that it is now unsafe. The northeast bastion of the citadel is perpendicular with the cliff sides. Huge rocks*are still menacing the locality, stand- ing as they are on the flank of tke mount- ain. It will take several days to haul cut the bodies from under the huge mass of debris The damage will, it is said, exceed $1,000,000. The houses in the locality were built of stone and brick, and inhabited by ship laborers, etc. Communication with Diamond Harbor was cut off by this landslide, which covers the road in a solid mass for some 300 feet in length, and from 15 to 25 feet wide. The telegraph, telephone and electric light wires are all down. The accident is accounted for by the fact that the recent two fearful days of heavy rain, succeeding a month of dry weather, tilled the crevices in the parched and thirsty soil, and thus loosened its hold. The scenes witnessed around the place of the disaster were in every sense of the word heartrending. Here a mother sought her child, anda desolate man dug in the debris in hopes of finding his wife. Shrieks and cries filled the air. No pen could describe the terrible scenes. The World's Fair. New York, Sept. 20. The committee on the site and buildings of the World’s Fair this afternoon decided that the location should be between 97th and 127th Streets, 4th Avenue and North River, to include the Riverside Park and Morningside Park, and property contiguous thereto The probable cost of the buildings to be erected is $6,200,000. Schooner Seized. Ortawa, Sept. 20. The Louise Harkin, an American fishing schooner, came into Sydney to-day and endeavered to purchase sails.
