NEWSERY. a me ~~ than OU start oni our fortune if Yor uick—CITY W wmoeth, Bs. NOVELTY ou, July 22, 1885.- 6m & call and examine the largest stock of Household Furniture, &.,| The New House of Commons. ee MARKED DIMINUTION OF THE NUMBER OF TITLED MEMBERS. | It is not a little- sigvificant that there /Sheald be in the new Parliament a masked | falling eff in the number of members who ; are connected with either the Peerage or! the Baronetage. Both Liberals and Con- | _servatives have svffered in this way slmost equally strikingly ard equally unexpect- ,edly, and hence it may be fajely inferred that the discomfiture they have experienced ‘has been due rather to their social position \than their political views. In the House | of 1880 there were three Irish peers, five- ‘and-thirty eldest sons of peers, eight-and- ‘forty younger sons of peers, seventy | baronets, and more than two hundred of tieir near connections by blood or mar- ringe. In the House of 1885 there is only ,ene Irish peer, while there are under ‘twenty eldest sons of peers, under | _thirsy’ younger sons of peers, under fifty baronets, and abouts one hundred and fifty ‘of their kindred by consanguinity or ,aflinity, although there were candidates jenouph and to spare. No doubt the names _of many of the chief territorial houses are ‘still to be found among those of the mem- hers. @he celebrated passage in which | ‘Lord Beacénsfield described the division by | which Sir Robert Peel was turned out of | office in 1846 mig still be adopted, with |substantial additions, in speaking of the | New House of Commons. In it there will | be found the Mannersés, the Ben- }tincks, the Lowthers, the Stanleys, jand the Lennoges, the Cavendishes, | the Grosvenors, the Gowers, the | Greys, and the Fitzwiltiams—but not in |their former strength ; while the ‘“‘ great ‘governing families ’ of Russel), Campbell, ,and Somerset are left, for the first time for | perhaps a century and a half, without any ‘Trepreseatative at all, On the other hand, the Hamiltons will be almost as numerous aa they were in the household ef #rederick Prince of Wales. An obvious effect of the general redustion in th- class of members who usually enter Parliament young has been to assist in raising the average age of the members, who, with the exception of a proportion of Mr. Parneli’s followers, are nearly all in mature life and something twors.—Lendon World. he SE Or Valuabls Personal Supervision. s+ Stock Journal, celebvated his 80ih birthday on Monday week. He has completely re- covered from the serious dlnees which he passed through a short time sines and is able te personally attend to the improve- monts which he is constantly making on the Peckforten estate. Lord Tollemache possesses about 35,000 acres of land in | Cheshire, and it is a most striking testimony to the value of his supervision that during the whole of the agricuitural depressien from 1877 to 1885, his lordship had neither a vacant farm uor a_tenent in atrears. His estate in Oheshirs has during his lifetime been cut up into farms of about 200 acres in extent, tis lordship comsidering that a thrifty farmer with sens and daughters could do excel- lently on a 200-acre farm, while they would suffer severely on a smatier holding. In order to break up his estate into farms of that size he built, or rebuilt, between 50 and 60 farmhouses at the cost of £148,000, each of these farms or homesteads costing Lord Follemache about £2,800. In addi- tien to this, Lord Tollemache has built no fewer than 260 cottages for the accommo- dation of his labourers. Se see It is aaid that in addition to the $800,- 000,000 in gold in the Bank of England, there are also 400,000 acres of the most valuable land in England, awailing the heirs of the Chase gnd Townley estates, -<2~- Mrs, Morrisey, 91 years of age, of Kes- wick Ridge, drove to Fredericton, N. B, day before Christmas, before seven o'clock in the horning. She was bound to see the stir in the city just before Christmas. ~<——_-- Every geod deed will have its blessing.
