There being no hard gravelly soil, no stiff clay, no hard pan, and no stickey calcareous soil to work is a great advantage to him. By a very crude implement, which can scarcely be called a plough the | land is torn up. ‘This plough consists of a triangular piece of wood about 18 in. in length and 6 in. in diameter at the largest end, the other being pointed. Ploughing 1s hard work for both cattle and the man, and the best a man can do is to tear up three-quarters of an acre a day, and the work then is poorly done. The land has to be ploughed in The cattle cost from 1 to 4 pair, but the average price is about 1 pound, 12s. The average price of a plough is 1s. 8d. The only other implement used is a log or slab of wood 6 ft. or 8 ft. crops. long, drawn sideways acruss the field by one or two pair of cattle to erush the clods and smooth the surtace. After the land is puiverised, and finally this is well done, too, the last ploughing takes place, when a man or woman dribbles the seeds fromthe hand into the furrow. The next operations are those of reaping and thrash- ing. The reaper consists ofa blade of iron 6 in. in length, 1 in. in width, and curvec like an old-fashioned sickle, with a notched and a short handle. Its cost is 2d. the harvester sits upon his heels, cuts a handful of straw, which he lays down, and then waddles on without rising and cuts another lot tle cuts about one-twelfth of in acre a day, for which he receives 2] 2d, vit of which he has to board himself. \fter this primitive reaping machine comes binder, who gathers up the grain and binds it into It is then shocked, viter aday or two carted to the thrashing floor, which consists merely of a f eave sheaves piece of hard ground, and here the grain is trodden under foot by oxen, and winnowed by means of a large scoop made of reeds, which is used to sift the grain from the chaff. cD ei Mg Special Notices.
